After five years of temporary positions, and repeated disappointment in the math academic job market, Alex finally found a permanent destination in the Fall of 2017 at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where Sabrina had joined the Psychology department four years prior. They first met when Sabrina served as a panelist during part of Alex’s new faculty orientation, but Alex was far too intimidated to initiate a conversation. Words were finally spoken, and initial sparks flew, when they met again at a faculty group outing to a Mississippi Braves game just three days later. As fate would have it, Sabrina was tasked that semester with organizing monthly “New Faculty Friday” outings, and at the first such gathering, the topic of trivia was broached. It was under that guise that Alex first asked for Sabrina’s number, and their friendship began to deepen over weekly trivia nights (which they continue to this day) and long, meandering text conversations. In another fortuitous collision, Alex and Sabrina’s alma maters (Georgia and Ohio State, respectively) both qualified that season for their conference championship games, to be played back-to-back on Saturday, December 2, 2017. When they made plans to watch the games together at Alex’s apartment, Alex naively asked who else he should invite over. “I think it should be just us,” Sabrina responded. Thankfully, Alex took the hint. The day was an unmitigated success (including two conference titles), not the least part of which was the heart-melting introduction of Sabrina to Alex’s beloved, then 10-year-old flame point Siamese cat, Cauchy. Aside from some family time apart during that very first holiday season, Alex and Sabrina have been virtually inseparable since that day. In July 2019, they moved into their home in Belhaven, which they were blessed to share with Cauchy until she passed away October 2024 at 17. Alex proposed June 8, 2024, which was accidentally 6 years, 6 months, and 6 days after their first college football date. Fortunately, their love is way too strong to be vulnerable to any associated negative energy.&nbsp;

If you're hoping for more of a bed and breakfast experience, the Fairview Inn in Alex and Sabrina's historic neighborhood of Belhaven could fit the bill. This is 1.3 miles away from the venue.

The closest airport is Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport (JAN). This small airport with just 9 gates will happily let you travel to/through Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, and Charlotte multiple times each day. Other destinations, such as Nashville, Washington DC, and Orlando, are offered on a more infrequent basis. Although direct flights are limited, you can't beat the security lines. Sabrina has lived in Jackson 12 years and has never waited longer than 15 minutes to get through!

New Orleans is exactly three hours away from Jackson by car, which makes it another viable airport with many more destination options. There's also an Amtrak that can take you from New Orleans to Jackson if you'd prefer a train instead of a car.

Two Museums are the Mississippi Civil Rights Museums and the Museum of Mississippi History. They are incredibly impressive and have free admission on Sundays!

You may recognize the outdoor gardens from our engagement pictures! The art museum has free admission to all, with rotating, optional exhibitions that cost $15 for entry.

Fondren is the neighborhood in Jackson where Duling Hall and the Homewood Suites (where there's a room block) are located. It's a cool, funky area where there's fun stuff to do (including the Capri theater, Highball Lanes bowling alley, art galleries and music stores) and good things to eat (including Pig &amp; Pint BBQ, Walker's, Saltine, Zundo [ramen], and Amerigo). Very walkable from the hotel!

Fondren 

This charming neighborhood has history (Eudora Welty's House and Garden) and cute houses, but more importantly, great things to eat and drink! The Belhaven Town Center has Fertile Ground Beer Co., Polito's Osteria (Sabrina's favorite Italian), the James Beard-nominated Elvie's, and Alex's favorite Mayday Ice Cream. He recommends Parent Trap (peanut butter ice cream and Oreo) while Sabrina thinks their Cookie Crush is the best cookies and cream ice cream she's ever had. La Cazuela is the Mexican restuarant they frequent all too often since it's at the end of their street. It's to the point where the wait staff get their Jumbo Texas Margaritas ready without them having to order, and we recommend those to you too! If you're feeling like a lil' kick with your meal, Sabrina swears by their house-made habanero hot sauce. Sounds spicier than it really is :)
