Saugatuck Dunes State Park is home to 2.5 miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline, coastal dunes, forested areas, 13 miles of trails and the 300-acre Patty Birkholz Natural Area.

Four trails take visitors over rolling terrain and sandy trails to Lake Michigan. The .75-mile, one-way Beach Trail (yellow markers) is the shortest route.

The park’s 300-acre Patty Birkholz Natural Area contains a coastal dune system and three endangered plant species, and stands as a testament to environmental champion and former state Sen. Birkholz’s legacy of love and commitment to the coastal dune system.

Summerhouse Lavender Farm began as a venture by Dan McGavin and Carol Brown to get back to a meaningful connection to community and nature. The Saugatuck/Douglas area with its creative and artistic vibe has always been a peaceful retreat for visitors and local inhabitants alike.

To celebrate their love for this community, a one acre parcel of land that had been used as a horse farm for the past 25+ years, has been transformed into a community gathering place and peaceful oasis for visitors. It was a perfect location with naturally sandy soil, lots of sun, and all of the natural necessities for growing lavender.

Many visitors to Holland are looking for signs of our Dutch heritage and find examples all throughout town. However, THE place to go to get a taste of the area's Dutch history and culture is Windmill Island Gardens!

Fortunately, a group of City Fathers in the 1950s and 60s recognized the importance of keeping our heritage alive as well as providing a place where community-members and visitors could gather. They were able to procure the last working windmill allowed to leave the Netherlands in 1964. The historic windmill 'de Zwaan' is the highlight of our park and stands amongst 36 acres of exhibits, gardens and natural areas. The mill still turns and grinds grain into flour and a tour up 5 floors is the highlight of any visit to the park.

Big Red Lighthouse

Holland's beloved and popular "Big Red" lighthouse, which stands proudly at the south side of the Holland Channel, has a long and rich history dating back to the first structure built on that site in 1870. Currently the lighthouse is owned and maintained by a non-profit lighthouse commission and is Michigan's most photographed lighthouse.

For the best view of Big Red, visit the Holland State Park where you can walk along the board walk to the north pier (wheelchair accessible). You can also view Big Red from Mt. Pisgah, where the dune stair case takes you 157 feet above sea level.
