Sam and Megan met on the dating website okcupid in 2016. An hour before their first date Megan almost canceled because she thought Sam was kind of boring over text. That hour before the date she described to her sister, Sarah, her perfect date: margaritas and playing Pokémon Go. Upon arriving at the date Sam and Megan both admitted they were too nervous to eat so they forewent dinner and got margaritas instead. Then Sam asked if Megan would like to walk around downtown Santa Barbara and play Pokémon go together. They had a wonderful evening and immediately knew they really liked each other. Much to the chagrin of Megan’s therapist who insisted she take things slow, Megan and Sam made things official after three dates. They said I love you in just under a month later, moved in with each other after three years, and adopted their dog Lexi in 2021 during the pandemic. In 2023 on a trip to Santa Cruz, Sam very much surprised Megan by proposing to her on a secluded hike with a beautiful antique ring.
