Parts of a Greek Orthodox Wedding

A traditional Greek wedding consists of a two-part ceremony: the betrothal and the crowning, both with symbolic meaning and often performed three times to represent the Holy Trinity. The wedding ceremony includes the exchange of rings, crowns (stefana), and the common cup, along with readings and prayers. Rituals included in the ceremony include lighting the wedding candles, saying prayers, reading scripture, and a ceremonial walk or dance around the altar.

Some Terms to Know

Koumbara: a female sponsor who has a spiritual and loving connection to the bride and groom, Petros' sister Ariana. Stefana (Wedding Crowns): The couple wears crowns, joined by a ribbon, which are exchanged three times by the koumbara. This symbolizes their joining as one and their new roles as king and queen of their home. The Common Cup: The couple shares wine from a common cup, representing the sharing of joys and sorrows. Rings: The rings are exchanged three times, symbolizing the union and the promise of eternal love.
