Love at First Lab

In 2017, two newly admitted and eager students met in the Medical Laboratory Science program at Northern Illinois University. They caught each other's eye on day one. When it came time to pick seats in the lab, it quickly became clear that Alex and Samantha were both secretly waiting for the other to make the first move. As fate would have it, the last two seats were right next to each other, and thus, they became lab partners for life. Months of studying together turned into something much more, and in November 2017, their relationship became official and blossomed into something beautiful. Since then, Samantha and Alex have been partners in life, supporting each other through every twist and turn of their professional and personal journeys. Growing physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It started with a move from Dekalb to Northbrook, where they both finished their clinical education and proudly graduated with their B.S. degrees in Medical Laboratory Sciences. After that, Alex dove into full-time work in Chicago while Samantha pursued a graduate degree in Pathologists' Assistant Studies. Over the next couple of years, they moved to Evanston, IL, then downtown Chicago, and then to Glenview, IL because who doesn’t like a good adventure? Fast forward to the next chapter; As Samantha was wrapping up her education and clinical training, her job took her to the northern suburbs of Chicago, while Alex received exciting news. He was accepted into Physician Assistant school in Charleston, SC! A long-distance relationship was suddenly on the horizon. But if anyone could make it work, it was these two. Endless phone calls, countless flights, and unwavering determination kept them going strong. In 2022, the stars aligned once more when Samantha landed an amazing job in Charlotte, NC. Just as Alex was nearing the end of his studies and had been accepted into a fellowship program there. It was the perfect opportunity for them both to be together and continue chasing their dreams. In 2023, they officially made the Queen City their home and never looked back. Now, here we are, in 2024/2025, Alex and Samantha are thriving in Charlotte, living the life they’ve worked so hard to build. They’ve come a long way, and the best part? They’re just getting started. They can’t wait to celebrate their love, their journey, and everything ahead with you all in the beginning of this next, new, exciting chapter of their lives.

What should I wear?

The dress code is semi-formal/cocktail attire. The ceremony will be held in a Catholic church, so we kindly ask that guests dress with respect for the setting. Keep in mind that the church may have specific guidelines, such as no bare shoulders, so it’s a good idea to bring a shawl or cover-up if needed. Thank you for helping us honor this special moment in a thoughtful and respectful way!

Are kids invited?

We love your little ones, but we’re keeping the celebration adults-only (with the exception of our flower girl and ring bearers). We hope this gives you a chance to relax, unwind, and enjoy a well-deserved night out! Thanks for understanding, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you!

What is an "unplugged" ceremony?

An&nbsp;unplugged&nbsp;ceremony means we’re asking all our guests to put away their phones, cameras, and other devices during the ceremony so everyone can be fully present and enjoy the moment. We promise there will be plenty of photo ops later in the day! If you’d like to capture some memories, we’ll have amazing professional photographers there to do all the work. Thanks for helping us keep the ceremony intimate and distraction-free—we can’t wait to see you there!

Are there hotel room blocks available?

Yes! Will Transportation be provided?

Yes, a complimentary shuttle will run between the Hyatt House and the reception venue throughout the evening. Please note that transportation&nbsp;will not&nbsp;be provided to the church ceremony, so guests are kindly asked to plan their travel accordingly. Shuttle times will be posted closer to the wedding date—please check back for updates!

When is the RSVP Deadline?

Please RSVP by September 1, 2025.

What time should I arrive?

The ceremony will begin promptly at 1:30 PM. We kindly ask that you arrive by 1:15 PM to ensure everyone is seated on time, as doors will close once the ceremony starts. Cocktail hour will be from 5:00 to 6:00 PM, and you’re welcome to arrive anytime during that hour. We kindly ask that guests make their way to the ballroom around 6:00 PM to find their seats for the reception.

We know many of our guests are traveling from out of town, so here are some travel recommendations including flights, lodging, and transportation.

Flights

If you are choosing to fly, Charlotte Douglas International Airport is the closest and most convenient airport. It is located approximately 20 minutes away from the city and the hub for American Airlines. Those traveling from Illinois - O'hare and Midway are great options, but don't forget about Peoria airport as well, which frequently offers direct flights to and from CLT.

Alex is an avid enjoyer of specialty coffee and is quite the hobbyist. Undercurrent has yet to fail him! Stop by if you are looking for a quaint coffee spot.

The Olde Mecklenburg Restaurant & Biergarten at Ballantyne

This place is very unique to Charlotte and so much fun! There are man-made whitewater rapids that you are able to raft on with a group. They have endless hiking trails, flatwater kayaking and paddle boarding, rock climbing, mountain biking, ropes courses, zip lines, and SO MUCH more.

U.S. National Whitewater Center

We frequent many parts of this greenway. Whether training for another race, going to play some pickleball, softball, or just taking a walk on a nice afternoon. There are many entrances all over Charlotte and even into South Carolina. So if you have some free time you want to spend outside, we highly recommend checking out this greenway.

Little Sugar Creek Greenway

Visit the park where Alex proposed! Beautiful walk and scenery with connections to the greenway.
