Q + A

When is the RSVP deadline?

Please RSVP by July 14, 2024.

What's there to do on the island?

There's lots to do on a little island!

- Golf: The iconic 9-hole links-style course boasts to be one of the most scenic in the state, with a view of the ocean from every hole. Pro tip: bring an extra ball for hole #7. Rates and reservations here. Let Sam or Dave know if you plan on playing for a pre-wedding tee off.

- Bike: The island is 3.5 miles long by 1.5 miles wide, offering a perfect biking loop that will take you to various beaches and trails.

- Beach: Hamilton Beach is around the corner from the Inn (5 min walk). If you're up for a small adventure, people love walking across the sand bar to Little Chebeague on the south side of the island at low tide.

- Eat: Get breakfast or lunch at Two Birds Cafe or the Inn. The bar at the Inn is popular for its Bloody Mary and is stocked with craft Maine beer. Doughty's Island Market carries a small selection of beer, seltzer, and wine.

Boat charters: There's no doubt that the best way to see the scenery is by boat. Arrange for a private charter ride so you can explore the coastline and inner islands or hop abroad the Casco Bay Lines ferry. Fogg's water taxis will take you wherever you want to go.

Are there any grocery stores on the island?

The Chebeague Island Inn has a full bar and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Chebeague Island Boatyard also has a small convenience store with snacks, beer, and wine as well as a deli called the Niblic which serves sandwiches and salads. Doughty's Island Market is an independent grocery if you are renting a house and prefer to cook yourself.

Is there wifi/cell service on the island?

Please plan for there to be limited cell phone service and wifi at the Inn!

Is the wedding indoors or outdoors?

Both the ceremony and reception will be outdoors on grass. The weather on Chebeague Island in September can be variable, so please plan to bring layers if necessary for the ferry ride and wedding. The ground is also soft and grassy, so plan footwear accordingly - we'd recommend against stilettos or bring heel protectors for the day!

What’s the attire for wedding day?

~Summer coastal garden party cocktail attire~

Think of: light and airy fabrics - light colored suits (no tan), fun patterns, sports jackets, maxi, tea-length, or sundresses with floral patterns or pastel colors. We recommend espadrilles, comfortable wedges, or strappy platform sandals as they are ideal for walking on grass. If you would like to wear heels, bring heel protectors for the grass. No white, ivory, cream, silver or dark colored (e.g., navy) dresses, please!

Do I need a rental car?

It depends! How long are you staying? Are you trying to explore the greater Portland area or go up to Acadia afterwards?

If you are going to be staying on the island or in downtown Portland, you do not need to rent a car. It will be easy to Uber/Lyft/taxi from the airport to downtown Portland (about a 10 minute drive), and then get to the island from there -- details on "Travel to Portland & Island" page.

How do you pronounce Chebeague?

Shuh-beeg

How long is the ferry ride to Chebeague?

About 15 minutes from Cousins Island in Yarmouth or 90 minutes from Portland.

Where should I stay?

We'd love for you to stay on the island with us, but not a problem if you want to stay in Portland! Please click here for page for a list of house rentals.

The islanders rent out their homes for weekend or week-long rentals. In true Chebeague fashion, things might seem a little dated (including the rental listing which might require you to email or call the host to make a reservation!).

How will I get around the island?

There will be shuttles available for pickup/drop off at both docks. Please let us know where you’re staying and when your arrival date/time is. Some house rentals come with use of an island car, golf cart, and/or bikes. You can also rent a golf cart for your stay through Dyl’s Carts!

For those of you renting homes on the Island, make sure to coordinate with your host about getting to/from either ferry.

How do I get to the venue if I'm staying in Portland?

Do not take the ferry from Portland on the wedding day unless you come earlier in the day, which you're welcome to! Please take the ferry from Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth to Stone Wharf, a short 5 minute walk from the Inn. Please see "Travel to Portland & Island" for more details.

The last ferry back is 10:30 pm. If you would like to stay for the after party, you can arrange for a water taxi to take you back to Portland.

I want to eat in Portland. Do I need reservations?

We'd advise booking a reservation when possible as it gets busy during the weekends in the summer (like Papi Portland) though some are walk-in only (like Boda).

What will the weather be like during the wedding weekend?

Your guess is as good as ours! Temperatures can vary from 60s to 80s -- check the weather before you pack for your trip and bring layers for the ferry rides and evenings!

Where do I purchase my ferry tickets?

Chebeague Transportation Company departs from Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth, Maine. Most guests of the Inn use this ferry because it’s only 15 minutes and lands a short walk from the Inn.

If you’re driving, you’ll want to park in the satellite parking lot on Route 1 in Cumberland, and then take the complimentary shuttle to the ferry.

If you’re taking a cab or Uber from the airport or bus station, you’ll want the cab driver to bring you to the end of Wharf Rd on Cousin’s Island, Yarmouth, Maine.

Tickets for the ferry must be purchased in advance. You can get them here.

Casco Bay Lines departs from Portland and is a scenic ride that stops at four islands along the way with an audio tour, taking about 1.5 hrs to get to Chebeague. This is a great option if you have the leisure of time and want to experience Casco Bay. This ferry lands at Chandler’s Cove which is on the other side of the island. It’s about a 15 minute drive from the Inn.

You don't need to purchase tickets in advance but they recommend arriving at the terminal about 30 minutes ahead of time, which will give you plenty of time to purchase your tickets and wait for the boat to start boarding.

More information here.

I'm staying at the Inn. What time can I check-in?

Check-in starts at 3:00 pm but you can leave your suitcase/bags earlier in the day, if needed.

Are kids allowed?

While we love kids, this is an adult-only celebration!
