A Love That Stood the Test of Time and Distance

Some love stories begin with fireworks, others with grand gestures. But ours? It began in the quiet, steady rhythm of friendship—built over 11 years, strengthened by faith, tested by distance, and proven by time.

The Beginning: UNIBEN and A Shared Faith

Our story began at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Nigeria, though, in many ways, it feels like it was waiting to be written long before we ever truly spoke. We walked the same paths, attended the same Christian congregation, and even shared mutual friends—but for years, our worlds merely brushed against each other without fully colliding.

In 2014, I was a senior, deeply immersed in my studies, while Linda was a bright-eyed freshman just beginning her university journey. We passed each other in hallways, sat in the same congregation meetings, and existed in the same spaces, yet barely exchanged more than a polite nod or a passing glance.

It wasn’t until four years later, long after we had both graduated, that fate finally intervened. A simple Facebook connection became the bridge that brought us together. Conversations that never happened in person now flowed effortlessly online, revealing a bond that had been quietly waiting to form. What started as casual chats soon turned into deep conversations, shared laughter, and a growing realization that something truly special was unfolding.

Sometimes, love doesn’t rush in—it lingers in the background, waiting for the right time to bloom. And for us, that time had finally arrived.

The Journey: Love Across Continents

As life often does, it led us down different paths—but our hearts stayed connected.

Our love story soon became one written in miles and time zones, with four of our five years together spent apart.

Linda was in Nigeria while I was in the U.S., pursuing my Master’s and PhD in Computational Mathematics at the University of Southern Mississippi. Then, just as we thought the distance couldn’t stretch further, she moved to the Netherlands to earn her Master's degree from the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University. From Nigeria to the Netherlands, from Hattiesburg to The Hague, our relationship spanned borders, yet our love remained unwavering.

Despite the distance and some visa hurdles, We celebrated each other over video calls, supported each other through exams and career milestones through WhatsApp messages, and held onto the promise that one day, we would finally be in the same place again.

The Reunion: Love Wins

Finally, in August 2024, our waiting ended. Linda moved to the U.S. to pursue her third degree in Environmental Sustainability at the University of Denver. After years of longing, sacrifice, and unwavering faith, we were no longer just voices on a screen—we were together.

Now, as we prepare for our wedding in Petal, Mississippi, on May 10, 2025, we celebrate the start of our new life as husband and wife and the journey that brought us here. It’s a story of love that defied distance, challenges, and time—a love that has truly stood the test.

As an extra blessing, two days before our wedding, I will be graduating with my PhD—becoming Dr. Ayo marking this as not just the beginning of our marriage but the fulfillment of years of dedication, perseverance, and love.

Some equations take years to solve, and some journeys take years to complete—but in the end, love always finds a way to converge.
