Mehndi is a form of temporary body art popular at South Asian weddings, where intricate henna patterns are applied to the body. The mehndi ceremony is a pre-wedding ritual commonly practiced in Indian weddings, involving the application of henna designs on the bride’s hands, feet, and sometimes other parts of the body. Beyond its decorative purpose, mehndi signifies good health, prosperity, and protection against evil spirits, and brings women together in unity and joy. The word “sangeet” comes from Sanskrit and means “sung together.” It’s a traditional prewedding ceremony that originated in North India, particularly among Punjabi families.

The haldi is a prewedding ritual common at traditional Indian weddings. "The haldi ceremony is a significant prewedding event and ritual in almost every Indian regional wedding," explains Sen. "It is celebrated on the wedding day or one day prior to the wedding day and is usually a close-knitted event. The closest family, relatives and friends come together on this auspicious occasion to apply turmeric paste (haldi) on the bride and groom's face and body. Some families also smear chandan (sandalwood powder) with rose water on the bride's face and hands and shower flowers on the couples. The occasion is celebrated with dhol (drum beats), Bollywood songs and endless dancing."

The baraat is a wedding procession for the groom that involves live music and dancing. Though it doesn't hold any religious significance, it's performed at almost every wedding to ensure a couple happily enters their marriage with friends and family by their side. This custom also symbolizes the groom's journey to marrying his wife and the joining of two families into one.
