Our Story: Love Found in Unexpected Places

Our story began in Clemson. What initially appeared as a chance encounter, I now realize was a wonderful gift from above. It was a chilly Saturday night in January, and I almost decided to stay in—I had just finished dinner with my family, and curling up with a classic rom-com seemed far more appealing. But my friends persuaded me otherwise, and little did I know, it would turn out to be one of the most memorable nights of my life.

The bar, Backstreets, hummed with the excitement of friends reuniting after winter break. In a sea of college students, Oliver stood out immediately in his golf attire, emanating a mature charm that caught my eye.

As the night unfolded, I found myself increasingly drawn to him. Our eyes met during a song I couldn't resist singing along to, and clearly amused, he chuckled to himself. Soon after, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder—a reminder of just how tall and handsome he was up close. "Hi, I'm Oliver," he warmly greeted me, and as I responded with, "Hi, I’m Sara Beth, nice to meet you," he interrupted, saying, "I really want to talk to you, but I have to go to the bathroom. Please don’t go anywhere, I’ll be right back." Normally, I might have scurried away to avoid further conversation, but something urged me to stay.

True to his word, Oliver returned promptly, and our interaction continued with a natural ease. His curiosity about me—my hobbies, favorite places to visit—was both refreshing and heartwarming. Discovering that our birthdays were exactly two months apart added to the charm of the evening. Conversing with Oliver felt like reconnecting with an old friend. His sincerity and attentive demeanor made sharing personal details effortless.

Eager to continue our conversation, he asked for my number and if he could take me out on a date the next night. Impressed and interested, I agreed. Oliver pursued me with a determination that eventually dispelled any doubts. There were moments I hesitated, turning down dinner invitations, as graduation approached, feeling naive to believe it could lead to more than casual conversation over a meal. However, his persistence paid off. By late spring 2023, a couple of months after our initial dates, I decided to make time for another date. I remember feeling hesitant about starting a relationship as I prepared to embark on post-graduate/adult life, which can be a somewhat daunting chapter for many college graduates. However, the date went wonderfully, and I thoroughly enjoyed his company.

Oliver was fun and by summer, I knew in my heart he was the one for me—perhaps long before I admitted it to him. He checked every box I could have imagined and then some. More than fulfilling criteria, he was everything I didn't even know I needed. If ever asked, I would say he complements me perfectly. He wasn't just my better half; he made me feel complete. Where I lacked, he brought strength, and vice versa. It felt like our paths were intentionally woven to intersect.

As fall approached, we faced the challenge of nearly 200 miles between us, but we vowed not to let the distance hinder our relationship. True to our promise, we not only survived but thrived. Despite the distance, we always made time to support our beloved Clemson Tigers, with occasional nods of support for Wake Forest. While pursuing his Master's Degree in accountancy, Oliver made it a priority to see me almost every weekend. Though I managed a few visits to him, he often traveled back and forth on I-85, showing unwavering dedication. During this time, he provided steadfast support as I transitioned into real estate. Despite my uncertainties, Oliver consistently believed in my abilities. His encouragement bolstered my confidence and strengthened our bond.

Looking back now, I realize that what began as an ordinary night at Backstreets became the foundation of something extraordinary. It wasn't mere chance that brought us together; Oliver's presence in my life is a testament to the faithfulness of God and His power to create a love story in even the most unexpected of places.

Our journey continues to unfold with each passing day, filled with gratitude for that January 13th, 2023.
