The Torre di Scopello is part of that defensive tower system that characterized Sicily from the 16th century, a period in which the frequent incursions by the Turks and pirates via the sea strongly threatened the political stability of the people ruling Sicily.

The construction of the Doria Tower began in 1595, and upon its completion in 1602, it officially started fulfilling its function of coastal defense with maximum efficiency.

Since 2010, it has been focused on promoting the Tower of Scopello as a location for exclusive events, cultural, culinary, and artistic in nature.
