The Story of Sara and Evan

Sara and Evan before they were "Sara AND Evan"

It's the summer of 2018. Sara, 26, had recently come back to Malmö after finishing an internship in Nicaragua. Evan, 24, had been living in Malmö since leaving the U.S. in late 2016.

August 18th, 2018 -  When Sara met Evan

Sara and Evan meet at a kräftskiva – a traditional Swedish crawfish party – in the backyard of a mutual friend. They talk about Harry Potter and, when the party moves to a club, Sara tries to teach Evan to dance salsa. She's not successful.

October 2018

Sara brings Evan to her family’s cabin in Djupvik, outside of Motala. They take the rowboat out on the lake, hunt for yellowfoot mushrooms with Sara’s family, and spend quality time with Cariño the golden retriever.

February 2019

Sara and Evan make their first trip outside of Scandinavia to visit Berlin.&nbsp; Shortly after, they both have to leave Sweden: Sara to write her MA thesis in Buenos Aires, and Evan because his Swedish visa has expired.&nbsp; The two aren’t sure when – or even if – they’ll see each other again…

May 2019

Sara and Evan are reunited!&nbsp; Sara returns from Buenos Aires and meets Evan – who has been traveling across Europe by train – in Palma de Mallorca.&nbsp; They spend a fantastic couple of days exploring the island, meeting Sara’s extended family, and eating tapas.&nbsp; This time in Palma leads to a turning point in the relationship. It becomes clear that, despite the challenges posed by visa issues and wanderlust, these two really have something special. After Palma, Sara returns to Sweden. Evan, who still hasn't been granted a new Swedish visa, isn't able to follow and instead returns to his Euro-trip. But it's clear that they will find a way to see each other again.

August 2019

Evan's new Swedish visa is granted. He comes back to Sweden in August 2019 – and has been there since! After going to the wedding of Mimmi and Rosanna (who are both bridesmaids at S &amp; E's wedding), Sara and Evan return to the Djupvik cabin.&nbsp; There, they exchange “I love you’s” for the first time on August 18th – exactly one year after the day they met.

December 2019 - the families meet

Evan and his family – Joel, Kathryn, and Pace – celebrate a Swedish Christmas with Sara and her family.

Spring 2020 - isolated, together

Sara and Evan move in together in the early days of the pandemic.&nbsp; Sara spends the social distancing era running and doing apartment renovation work. Evan, meanwhile, builds an apparatus to sprout dozens of avocado pits simultaneously.

Summer 2020

For the first time, Evan joins Sara’s family on their annual summer trip to the far north of Sweden. Sara paints the barn and cuts the grass while Evan reads and hangs out with Cariño.

May 2022

Sara joins Evan in California for the first time and is introduced to the wonders of Mexican food, Nor Cal breweries, and redwood trees.

August 2022

Sara and Evan buy an apartment together! What says “love” more than co-signing a mortgage…? Sara paints the walls, adds wood paneling, and builds bookshelves. Evan tries to keep the houseplants alive but with little success.

August 18th, 2023

Sara and Evan spend a week walking the Camino trail in northern Spain.&nbsp; Six years to the day after they first met, and five years after they first said they loved each other, Evan proposes to Sara in Bilbao. She says yes!

October 2023

Mats and Maria, Sara’s parents, visit California for the first time. They meet some of the Kathryn's side of the family and are also introduced to the wonders of Mexican food, Nor Cal breweries, and redwood trees.

September 2024

Sara and Evan spend three months in Barcelona eating tapas, drinking cañas, and embracing a slower and sunnier lifestyle.

Our Story

NOTE: As of March, the Swedish rail service announced construction work on the train tracks over the wedding weekend. Trains trips on Saturday and Sunday will take longer and require changing trains to get to Malmö / Copenhagen / Stockholm. Please factor this into your travel planning! Step 1 - Get to ScandinaviaFly into Copenhagen, Denmark. The airport is CPH. It's also possible to fly into Stockholm, Sweden (airport ARN) but Copenhagen is closer to the wedding location! Step 2 - Get to AlvestaTake the train to <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/tn7AjR1XJ9Xz3hQJA" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Alvesta</a>, Sweden. Which train you take depends on where you're coming from... From Copenhagen:Catch an Øresundståg ("Or-uh-soonds-tow-g") train from any of the big Copenhagen stations – Copenhagen Central, CPH airport, or Nørreport. You want to catch the one toward Växjö ("Veck-hwuh"). One leaves every hour or so. These are commuter trains and they do not require seat reservations or pre-booking, just tickets. You can't buy tickets on board the train. The easiest way to buy tickets is via the Skånetrafiken app – <a href="https://www.skanetrafiken.se/english/tickets-and-discount/#/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">info here.</a> From Stockholm:From Stockholm airport, you can get to Stockholm Central Station by taking the Arlanda Express train – <a href="https://www.arlandaexpress.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">info &amp; tickets here.</a>From Stockholm Central, you take an SJ high-speed train to Alvesta. These tickets have to be booked in advance, and they come with reserved seats. You can book tickets <a href="https://www.sj.se/en/search-journey/search/Stockholm%20Central/Alvesta%20station/2025-06-06" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">on the SJ site. </a>Note: the tickets are only released a few months in advance, so if there are no available trips showing on the SJ site yet, please check back closer to June! Step 3 - Get to the venue, "Vapenmagasinet"Vapenmagasinet is outside of Alvesta, in a little place called Moheda. The only way to get there is by car or taxi. On the wedding day, there will be a bus to bring people from Alvesta to the venue – and back again, for those staying in Alvesta! We will collect sign-ups for the buses close to the day of the wedding. For those who will drive their own cars, there is parking at the venue.

How to get there

We know that many of you are coming from far away, and you will likely want to make the most of your time in this part of the world. So if you’re interested in going somewhere before or after the wedding, we have collected some suggestions below! Copenhagen&nbsp;Denmark’s capital is only a few hours away from the wedding location, reachable by commuter trains that depart every hour. CPH is a fun city, with a relxed vibe and plenty of interesting architecture and design to enjoy.&nbsp; StockholmSweden’s capital is also just a train ride away, reachable by high-speed trains (book them at sj.se ). STHLM is built on a series of small islands, and you can spend a scenic day or two crossing between the islands and checking out the majestic old buildings. Anywhere else in EuropeBeen wanting to check Paris off your bucket list? Roam in Rome? Go all-in in Berlin? From both Copenhagen and Stockholm you can find (often cheap) flights to anywhere in Europe.&nbsp;

You have two options for accommodation: the hotel and the hostel. Both options have rooms reserved for the wedding – and a discount for wedding guests! Find more info on each option below:

The hotel

The hotel "Hotell Rådmannen" is in Alvesta, right next to the train station. It's about a 10 minute drive from the wedding venue – but on the wedding day, we will bus people between the hotel and venue! Breakfast is included. Send an email to <a href="mailto:info@konferenscentrum.se" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">info@konferenscentrum.se</a> to book one of the reserved rooms at the discounted rate. Mention "Sara Borras/Evan Farbstein" in the email, and note the room type and number of guests. The hostel

The hostel "Kronobergshed Vandrarhem" is only a short walk from the wedding venue. As of March 8th, all of the available rooms at the hostel have been booked. It's possible to camp on the hostel's property (using your own camping gear) and access the hostel's kitchen and bathrooms. The hostel charges 200 SEK per day for this. Accommodation

Dress code

Meet &amp; Greet dress code: “Casual” The Meet &amp; Greet dress code is “Casual.” Wear whatever you’d normally wear to a gathering of friends and loved ones! It will be held outdoors in the evening, so please make sure you will be warm enough. Wedding dress code: “Dressy Casual” (more or less) The wedding dress code is Dressy Casual – with a little wiggle room. In terms of dresses: this could be a dressy day dress or sundress. Midi/maxi skirts and jumpsuits work well too. Patterns and single colors are equally great! For those not wearing dresses: a suit &amp; tie is the “dressy” end of the spectrum, while chinos and a button-up are the “casual” end. Those options, and everything between them, are excellent.&nbsp; The ceremony will be held outdoors and the dinner will be indoors. It can get chilly, so bringing a jacket is a good idea.&nbsp; The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like the way you look. So when in doubt, go with what feels right!

Dress Code

One of the most fun things about Swedish weddings is the dinner, where the couple's immediate family and close friends tell stories, make jokes, play songs, and share their love.
