Our Story

Our Story

We were both masters students at the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland and spending a lot of time at Canmore, the Catholic chaplaincy. We decided we didn't want to be apart after a year, so we moved to Papua New Guinea to teach in the major seminary there. Now we're both PhD students at the University of Geneva--Sara in Reformation History and Ryan in Philosophy of Science.

How did you first meet?

Sara was standing in the hallway of the Catholic chaplaincy babbling about David Hume--that was enough for Ryan. Ryan made sheet pan chicken on the first date--that was enough for Sara. Then we sat around arguing the relative merits of Dominicans and Carmelites--case closed.

What's the most memorable trip you have taken together?

We were in Normandy in January 2019. Ryan wanted to see the Pointe du Hoc so we got on a farm road and took a bunch of nice photos. Ryan wanted to get closer and went on another deeply rutted farm road, thinking we could just turn around in a field later. This turned out to be a bad idea.

The most spontaneous thing we’ve done

Deciding to move to Papua New Guinea together after dating for about six months...

The dorkiest thing about us is

We're both PhD students in obscure fields--Sara's passion is early modern handwriting while Ryan gets excited about Polish logic.

What's your favorite activity together?

Cooking--Ryan's red sauce and Sara's sourdough make pizza!

A life goal of ours

Becoming saints and having children who also become saints.
