At the Venue

Between the ceremony and reception, there will be a cocktail "hour and a half." During that time, there will be activities in the park, including cornhole, ladder golf, and a chicken fling (While I've never had the privilege to participate in a chicken fling, I've heard they are a blast. Not sure what it is? Me neither, but the pictures from this article didn't disappoint.). Tables will be set up for card games or resting your feet. Down at the lake, you can rent kyacks or canoes. There are also over five miles of hiking trails at the park, most of which start right next to the chapel and reception hall. Food and a couple of drink options will be available outside the reception hall. For the younger kids, there's a playground by the parking lot.

SARA: I would just like to add more context on the Chicken Fling as someone who has participated before. My paternal grandparents had a cottage in Montello, WI which is a tiny town next to another tiny town called Princeton. Every May, Princeton hosts the Chicken Fling - this year is the 22nd one! We attended as a family many times, but all during my awkward stage so please enjoy the picture of my cousin Emily flinging her chicken and my Grandpa, Ron, with THE Chuck the Chicken instead of awkward ones of me.

The event is simple - fling a rubber chicken through a football goal post. Whoever flings from the farthest back wins. Except at the wedding. I will win at the wedding regardless of other's performance.

Located 15 minutes northwest of the venue, the Wisconsin Auto Museum is the largest auto collection in Wisconsin. While I haven't personally been there, it would probably be pretty neat if you like old cars.

Holy Hill is a beautiful basilica on the top of a hill only 8 minutes west of the venue. Weather permitting, the scenic tower should be open. After climbing 178 stairs, you will be rewarded with 360-degree views of the surrounding area.

Food

The Fox & Hounds Restaurant & Tavern

1298 Friess Lake Rd, Hubertus, WI 53033, USA
(262) 628-1111

This supper club has an all-you-can-eat Friday night fish fry and brunch on Sunday mornings. It's only a couple of minutes from the venue. Sara's grandparent's 60th wedding anniversary dinner was held here.

Sloppy Joe's Saloon & Spoon

3723 Hubertus Rd, Hubertus, WI 53033, USA
(262) 628-1800

We love the BBQ at Sloppy Joe's! It's about 10 minutes from the recommended hotels. A bit of a dive, but great food. If you, like me, typically avoid country music whenever possible, then suck it up. The food was that good.

Odyssey Family Restaurant

N82W15380 Appleton Ave, Menomonee Falls, WI 53051, USA
(262) 255-3036

Here's my rule for breakfast restaurants: You know you're in the right place if the furniture hasn't changed since the early 60s, and if you walk in and the average age of the customers drops 20 years. If you prefer avocado toast and a mimosa, try somewhere else. If you want 1500 calories worth of eggs, potatoes, meat, and gravy, they've got you covered. I haven't personally eaten here, but I looked at their menu, and now I'm hungry. 15 minutes from the hotels on the way to Milwaukee.

Bieri's Jackson Cheese & Deli

3271 Co Rd P, Jackson, WI 53037, USA
(262) 677-3227

This little cheese shop is 10 minutes north of our recommended hotels. Stop in to get some squeaky cheese curds! If you believe the sound your food makes when you eat it doesn't matter, then you've never had good, fresh Wisconsin cheese curds.

If you stay an extra day in the Milwaukee area, the best thing to do is cheer on the Brewers. As a bonus, for those of you traveling from Denver, you can watch them beat the Colorado Rockies at either 7 p.m. Friday or 1 p.m. Sunday.

If you also like food and beer, try J. Leinenkugel's Barrel Yard Restaurant. The restaurant is located just above the fence in left field and opens 90 minutes before the game. If you reserve an outside seat beforehand, you can dodge batting practice home run balls while you eat!
