Our Wedding

Sarah: Matthew and I met on the school bus during spring of 2018 after we were introduced by a mutual friend. We became friends, and as time went on, I began to develop a bit of a crush, but was unsure if it was mutual. I asked our friend to make a group chat with all three of us one day as a “subtle” way to get Matthew’s phone number. Later I reached out to Matthew individually and we began talking 1:1 and getting to know each other at a deeper level. On May 21st, nearing the end of the school year, he asked me to be his girlfriend. If you ask him how everything began, he may tell you a different story. He’ll say that before I took the initiative to get his number, he added “Sarah Berman” on Snapchat and that “I” didn’t add him back, so he assumed I wasn’t interested (and yet I kept sitting with him each day on the bus as if nothing had changed). Let this be a lesson to ask someone for their contact information and not just guess :)

Matthew: The rest of high school was spent getting to know each other more every day. Sarah and I had multiple classes together over the years that our time in high school overlapped. Some were more difficult than others, and taking AP Calculus together when one of us is clearly smarter than the other really develops patience. Winter nights were mostly filled with going to Central York Girls Basketball games to watch Sarah play. Spring of my senior year was the beginning of COVID, and this was the most challenging time of our relationship yet. There hadn’t been a time that Sarah and I were apart for an extended duration until this happened. I can confidently say that we grew a lot through that time. We learned not to take any moment together for granted because we never know when things could get turned upside down.

Sarah: Our college years have been full of highs and lows—the joys of holidays, summers, and home visits, and the lulls of long, busy seasons. They have been full of countless Zoom dates, phone calls between classes, and days where we were so busy we could barely talk. And yet, these years have been foundational for our relationship—forcing us to refine and strengthen our communication and challenging us to endure and persevere through the tough times. When Matthew proposed on November 23, 2022, I knew that the distance had been worth it. Through it, we’ve developed a love that is strong and enduring. The end of long distance is in sight—June 15th can't come soon enough!

Matthew: I think if you asked me one month into our relationship I would have told you that I undoubtedly loved Sarah. I thought love was a feeling back then. Felt in the butterflies I would get in my stomach when Sarah walked in a room, or just the way we looked at each other when we were still in the honeymoon stages of our relationship. I’ve learned that love isn’t always a feeling as much as it is a choice. To wake up every day and to choose to love each other over anything else. I believe we can only love like this because we were first loved by Jesus. God has a love for both of us that is higher and better than any love we could give each other, but we are committed to try every day to love each other as unconditionally as we can. This is what we want to show everyone through our marriage. We hope that everyone can see a reflection of Christ’s love in us, and ask what makes that love so special. There is no doubt in my mind that Jesus has been with us in each stage of our relationship. Now if you would ask me, almost six and a half years into our relationship, I would tell you that I do completely love Sarah. Waking up and choosing her every day is one of the easiest decisions I get to make. In making that choice each day, I find that the feelings never leave, I still get butterflies, and I still haven’t left the honeymoon stage.
