Volterra as some of you may know is a medieval city that lies on a Roman and Etruscan foundation. At the tail end of the middle ages the famous Lorenzo dei Medici came to Volterra looking for important minerals such as sulfur, vitriol and alum. In order to extract these minerals he had to attack from below which was no small challenge. Unfortunately for Volterra, without the same quantity of resources as the Florentines. Lorenzo built this tower in the 15th century and it was used for military purposes but also for reclusion.

Come in the afternoon on a weekend. Since in present day the structure surrounding this tower is a prison it has very selective opening times.

Volterra, come alcuni di voi sapranno, è una città medievale che sorge su fondamenta romane ed etrusche. Alla fine del medioevo il famoso Lorenzo dei Medici venne a Volterra alla ricerca di importanti minerali come zolfo, vetriolo e allume. Per estrarre questi minerali ha dovuto attaccare dal basso, il che non era una sfida da poco. Purtroppo per Volterra, senza la stessa quantità di risorse dei fiorentini. Lorenzo costruì questa torre nel XV secolo e fu utilizzata per scopi militari ma anche di reclusione.

Vieni nel pomeriggio in un fine settimana. Poiché ad oggi la struttura che circonda questa torre è un carcere, ha orari di apertura molto selettivi.
