It's a Thursday night in May of 2009 at a local Madison dive, "The Plaza." After a long and engaging talk about academics, religion, siblings, and music, Sarah and Josh part ways. Josh texts the next day, but gets no response. It turns out the two of them needed 5 years to grow. Fast forward to September 2014 on a Saturday night at "Alchemy," one of Madison's best spots for food, drink, and music. To the sound of guitars, banjos, bones, and the steel pan, Josh's lobster-hand dance was a hook for Sarah. It worked swimmingly. The two shared a salad, talked of past relationships, and agreed to meet again. Time to share contact info. Hmmm...there was already a Sarah Delany in Josh's phone. Ha! But this time, Sarah responded, over and over again. Soon after, a concert at the High Noon Saloon turned into a date replete with whiskey gingers, Spotted Cows, dancing, and laughs. Later, a careful assessment of Josh's bookshelf and massage skills allowed for further dates involving spicy Thai food, bossa nova Beatles covers, and Seinfeld. Within ten days, Sarah's mother Pam openly and hilariously proclaimed to Josh, "I love you!" -- a good omen of the eventual blessing that would be the merging of the two wonderful families . Sarah spent the fall semester in Milwaukee as an occupational therapy intern, but this didn't stop Josh from making a surprise visit on her birthday, and many more visits back and forth ensued. The next year was filled with crosswords, tea, hot sauce, family, Brazilian samba drumming and dance, Phish, hot sun, cold snow, and internal reflection. The choice was clear - Josh proposed with a black diamond atop a black diamond ski mountain in Colorado in January 2016, and Sarah responded "yes," over and over again.

Ancient Irish Traditions

Willow Basket: The willow basket holding the blessing stones was made in Ireland using traditional practices and materials. Willow, rush and straw are three materials that have been fundamental to Irish people from earliest times, used for thatching, making baskets, creels for donkeys' backs, eel traps, crab and lobster pots, skibs for harvesting potatoes and hampers, and many other objects. The circular walls of the first Irish dwellings dating from Neolithic times were made out of wickerwork plastered with mud; these were built on crannógs (artificial lake islands) dating from the Bronze Age (1200-circa 500BC). Horeshoe Charm: The bride carries a small horseshoe charm down the aisle along with her bouquet as a traditional practice to bring good luck and compassion. The horseshoe was invented during the Iron Age, perhaps in a Celtic tribal setting. According to Celtic folk belief, iron is the very blood of the Earth itself and thus holds a magical significance for various Celtic tribes. In ancient Ireland, young women began sewing horseshoes into their dresses to protect them from evil on their journey to their wedding ceremony. Blessing Stone Ceremony: In this wedding tradition, well wishes, prayers and happy hopes for the couple are placed into a stone. Behind this idea is that natural objects, such as a stone, can actually anchor a thought. This tradition is tied into a notion of the sacredness of natural place. Having a stone with prayers bridges the groom and bride to the wisdom ancestors tied to particular place on the land. After the ceremony, this stone is tossed into a nearby body of water such as a river, stream, lake, or a well. It is important that water is involved; water, being the element that represents emotions and spirit. In the context of a wedding it is also about wishing the happy couple good fortune, prosperity and flow.

We have a complimentary 14-passenger shuttle that goes anywhere in a 3-mile radius of the hotel (based on availability). Starting at 6pm it goes to the following stops: Essen Haus, Hilton &amp; Monona Terrace, Francesca's, Great Dane, Old Fashioned, and Coopers Tavern. It is open to all hotel guests and leaves on the hour and half hour. ****Guests who intend to use the shuttle need to sign up with the front desk once they arrive at the hotel. It is on a first come, first serve basis.**** The last shuttle returning to the hotel will pick up guests at approx. 11:30pm.The Essen Haus is the location closest to the reception venue.
