The Martin and DeGrood families have known each other since the year 1999 when Sherlyn was pregnant with Sarah. Their families had several interactions throughout the years through church and school. David and Sarah became friends at the start of high school when they reconnected during Life Teen through St. Odilia Catholic Church. After talking for a little over a year and watching each other’s sports games, David asked Sarah to go to the movies. He picked her up to go see the movie IT. At the time, David was still 16 (but would turn 17 in less than a month). They were carded for the movie and couldn’t get in since it was a rated R movie. they ended up seeing Dunkirk instead. For their second date, they tried a different theatre to go see IT and got carded again. They went to the DeGroods house and watched The Nightmare Before Christmas (which is now a favorite for both of them). After a month of going out, they went to the haunted house Slaughterhouse in Tucson with some friends on October 7th, 2017 and David asked Sarah to be his girlfriend.
