What is an aufruf?
The word "aufruf" is Yiddish, and means "calling up". The aufruf takes place prior to the wedding, during Shabbat morning services. While traditionally, the aufruf was for just the groom, we will both be participating in the aufruf.
Who is invited to the aufruf?
Everyone is welcome to attend!
What happens during an aufruf?
The bride and groom will be called to the Torah for an Aliyah, the honor of reciting the blessings before and after the Torah is read. After the Aliyah, both sets of parents join their children on the bima to recite a special blessing for them. The Rabbi will then lead the congregation in singing mazel tov to the couple and their families while friends and family throw (soft) candies at them.
What should we wear to the aufruf?
Please dress appropriately for religious services. Business casual is almost always appropriate for both men and women. Men can also wear suits, with or without suit jackets and ties. Women can wear dresses or skirts with blouses that are at least knee-length or longer. Please make sure that if you're wearing a sleeveless blouse or dress, you wear a shawl or cover up so that your shoulders are covered.
