Aaron and Serena met when they were both studying journalism at the University of Alabama. Serena wanted to begin writing for the campus newspaper and went to meet with the editors of the culture desk and their one staff writer, Aaron, was that staff writer and had seen several other interested fellows join the desk only to leave after a few weeks. When she was introduced to the team as the new girl, he looked her in the eyes and said “please don’t leave.” And she hasn’t.

It turned out Aaron and Serena shared a class in the journalism program. Aaron asked Serena to hang out several times over a few months and patiently waited for her friends to clue her in that he liked her. Their first hang out (and first kiss) was at a lake hang out with some other friends.

They continued dating as they graduated college. Aaron began working for the local paper in Northport, AL while Serena completed grad school. When a job opportunity for Serena came up in Tuscaloosa, she took it and they moved in together.

In September 2023, Aaron took Serena on a weekend getaway to his hometown of Huntsville, AL. After a picnic, a walk in the park and feeding the ducks and koi, he pulled her into a gazebo and proposed.
