Our Wedding

I had always been sceptical about online dating, but one evening, after much persuasion from my friends, I found myself downloading Tinder. Swiping through countless profiles, I was about to give up when a profile caught my eye. Her name was Shalini. Her pictures showed a woman with a radiant smile, a love for adventure, and one adorable snapshot of her upside down. The caption read, “You’re trying to work out why I look so familiar… 🙋🏽‍♀️ It’s the girl from your dreams!” and “Shalini’s Parents: ‘you’re welcome.’” Intrigued, I swiped right, and to my surprise, it was an instant match. I messaged her first. My opening line was simple but charming, and I was accused of using it many times before. We exchanged messages for days, discovering shared interests, humour, and music. Our conversations flowed effortlessly, and it felt like I had known her for years, despite the time when Shalini decided to blank me as she concluded I wasn’t for her. Finally, I suggested we meet in person, and we agreed on a first date—bowling. I arrived at the bowling alley a little early, nerves fluttering in my stomach. I spotted Shalini immediately. She was even more attractive in person, with a warm smile that put me at ease. She waved and walked over, greeting me with a hug that felt surprisingly natural. "Ready to lose?" she teased as we made our way to lane 19. "In your dreams," I shot back, feeling more confident. We settled into our lane, and the game began. Shalini was a decent bowler, and I surprised both of us by managing a few strikes. Each time I knocked down the pins, Shalini would cheer me on, her encouragement genuine and infectious. We laughed at our gutter balls and celebrated our spares with high fives and playful banter. As the night progressed, our conversation deepened. We talked about our families, our dreams, and the little things that made us happy. Shalini shared stories from her Mexican adventures and I told her about my love for Arsenal. There was a moment, between turns, when she looked at me with those bright, kind eyes, and I felt an undeniable connection. Then came a memorable moment that sealed the night in my mind forever. Shalini, with a competitive spark in her eye, went for a strike but ended up with a gutter ball. She let out a loud, frustrated "Oh for f***s sake!" immediately realising she was surrounded by kids. Her face wasn’t embarrassed at all as the parents shot disapproving looks our way. I couldn’t help but burst out laughing, and after a moment, Shalini joined in, her laughter as infectious as ever. After the final frame, which I narrowly won, we decided to grab a bite to eat at the local Turkish place. Over greasy fries and J20-tasting cocktails, we continued talking and laughing, losing track of time. It was as if the rest of the world had faded away, leaving just the two of us in our little bubble of shared joy. Eventually, it was time to part ways. I walked Shalini to her car, and as we stood there, under the soft glow of the streetlights, I took her hand. "I had a great time tonight," I said, my voice sincere. "Me too," she replied, her smile warm. The next day, I was keen to organise date number two. “Enjoy the rest of your day at work and I’ll message you later so we can arrange the second date you’re so eager for 😜. I’m going to the gym (yes, weights this time) and do my cleaning 🧼.” "I’d like that," she answered, and at that moment, I knew this was the beginning of something special. Meeting Shalini had been a chance swipe, a leap of faith into the unknown, but it had led to an evening filled with laughter, connection, and the promise of more to come. Our first date had been a perfect strike, setting the stage for many more shared adventures. Now, as my fiancée, Shalini still makes me laugh just as she did that first night, swearing in front of kids and all.
