Our Wedding

Shannon’s take on it: You could say our story starts almost 18 years ago when we were attending St. Pats grade school together, but the real excitement didn’t happen until the Spring of 2017. Timing is really everything and the timing of it all was honestly perfect for us. Jake, and the entire Bermel family, have been great friends of ours. I would babysit his siblings, he coached my brother’s JV basketball team, our families would play golf together—the list goes on. Jake was always the entertainer and would have everyone laughing whenever we got together. I always thought of him as a good friend of mine, some even speculated that it might have been a crush. After many years of fulfilling the “friend” title, timing did as timing always does and I finally got a date with the infamous Jacob Bermel. At the time he was living and working in Arizona, and I was still in school at Iowa State. He reached out to me after not hearing from him for a few months, and that conversation turned into several conversations that turned into nightly phone calls that eventually turned into a promise that when he moved home from Arizona, we would go on a date. Just like that, on March 7th I found myself driving home from Ames more nervous than ever to visit a guy I had known my whole life but somehow felt like I was going to meet for the first time. A few weeks later I was back in Cedar Falls with him celebrating my 22nd birthday, and three weeks after that on April 19th 2017 he asked me to be his girlfriend. We spent a year conquering both big and little milestones together. My graduation from Iowa State, trips to Chicago and Arizona, meeting each others extended families, countless holes of golf at Pheasant, buying a house, and falling more and more in love along the way. On April 12th 2018 I found him down on one knee asking me to be his wife. From there the rest is history, but really it’s only the beginning. I am so excited to be marrying Jake, and I can’t wait to share our special day with all of our family and friends. I couldn’t ask to spend my life with anyone but Jake, and I look forward to our future together. He’s thoughtful, caring, goofy, and selfless. He has the biggest heart of anyone I know. He loves me perfectly and nothing puts a smile on my face like knowing I’m marrying my best friend. Here’s to forever, Jacob Jay!! Jake’s perspective: It all started back in 4th grade when we had homeroom together. Thanks St. Pats. It’s funny how you can be friends with a girl for so long and flirt with her for so long before you two realize that maybe you should be together. But the timing wasn’t right. We finished grade school together and then went on to high school at CF. Still friends. Still hanging out together. Still flirting. Still not together. Again, timing is everything. I graduated and went to UNI while Shannon was still a senior in high school. Same thing—the timing still wasn’t right for us. She graduated and went to Iowa State and I was still at UNI. Still friends, still hanging out when we could, and still just not the right time for us. I graduated from UNI and was working in Cedar Falls during the summer and in Arizona over the winters. Shannon was still at school in Ames, and while we were still friends and saw each other at family get togethers or while hanging out with friends, it seemed that our timing just never worked out. I would always send her random texts and snapchats just to keep in touch and finally over that winter we just clicked. We started talking on the phone and FaceTiming everyday, and when it was time for me to move home, Shannon and I were ready to begin. Finally our timing was right. We starting driving back and forth from CF to Ames and Ames to CF whenever we could just to see each other. On April 19th 2017, I finally asked her to be my girlfriend, and she responded with “Are you serious?” And that’s when it all began. Little things like hanging with each other’s friends and meeting each other’s families, to going on trips to see Cubs and Bears games, and eventually flying her down to Arizona to visit while I worked another winter there. After 11 months of dating, I knew. She was the one for me. I talked to my family and brought my mom and sisters with me to buy the ring. Then the next conversation I had to have was with Shannon’s parents. Oh boy. I asked them to go get a drink with me downtown and told Shannon I had to work late that night. Luckily, after a very nerve wracking conversation for me, they said yes to asking Shannon to be my wife. A few weeks later back downtown I knelt down and held out the ring begging the question and if she would spend the rest of her life with me. This time she said “What’re you doing?” So yes, I’m being serious and this is what we’re doing. Thanks Shannon for making me the happiest man in the world. I love you.
