7:30 AM
Kashi Yatra
This is a symbolic moment of reflection for the groom where he asks himself if he truly wants this path of family, duty and love or if he seeks the silence as an ascetic.
The bride's family offers him guidance that choosing the path of the family man is not a lesser choice. They remind the groom that through this path, many people have found spiritual growth and that love and family are not distractions from spirituality.
8:00 AM
Maalai Maatral
The bride and groom exchange their maalai (flower garland) three times. In this ritual the bride and groom race to throw the garland on each other three times to claim victory. They are lifted by friends and family who help manouver them to give each side the best shot.
8:30 AM
Oonjal
Oonjal (swing) is a ritual where the couple sit and lightly sway back and forth while they enjoy traditional songs sung by the women in their families.
As the swing moves back and forth, elders surround the couple chanting blessings. The motion is a reminder that marriage brings both joyous and challenging moments—just as the swing alternates heights, so will life vary. The communal rocking symbolises that family and community will support them through all phases.
9:30 AM
Kanyadaanam / Kannikadaanam
This ceremony is symbolic of the bride's family entrusting their daughter into the care of the groom.
10:30 AM
Maangalya Dharanam
The groom's family presents the bride with a nine-yard silk saree. The bride changes into the new saree, signifying her new role as wife and daughter-in-law and returns to the mandapam.
The groom is presented with the thaali (necklace) to tie around his bride's neck as a symbol of marriage. The groom ties the knot around the bride's neck indicating they are now married.
11:15 AM
Saptapadi
Hand in hand, the bride and groom embark on a significant journey, encircling the sacred fire seven times. These verses enunciate the seven sacred pledges of matrimonial commitment.
Next, the groom holds the bride’s left toe as she steps over a grindstone. This symbolically represents the solidity of their union.
