Donegal is amongst the best regions in the world to visit in 2024, according to Lonely Planet. Lonely Planet announced Donegal as the fourth-best region to visit. Sea cliffs at Sliabh Liag – the highest in Europe – and “miles of unspoilt coastal hiking trails along the Wild Atlantic Way” are listed among the reasons for Donegal’s inclusion on the list.
- Mountcharles Pier: Prepare to go for a dip accompanied by an excellent coffee/pancake treat at Salthill Cabin.
- Donegal Castle: The well-preserved 15th-century Donegal Castle is an imperious monument to Irish might. Apart from a place to hide from the rain, the castle’s Great Hall is quite the treat with its ornate fireplace, French tapestries and Persian rugs. Guided tours available hourly.
- Rossnowlagh Beach: Home to the local surfing club, the beach offers water sport activities like surfing for those brave enough to tackle the Atlantic Ocean in October. Lovely for a walk to cure the hangovers too.
- Sliabh Liag: Despite the Cliffs of Moher’s publicity , these spectacular sea cliffs are among the highest in Europe, over 600m. From Teelin, a road through the stark landscape leads to the lower car park (with hiking signs) beside a gate in the road; drive another 1.5km to the upper car park (often full in summer) right beside the viewpoint. Take a trip to the Rusty Mackerel Restaurant for a bite of food after!
- Glengesh Pass: On a narrow road from Glencolumbcille to Ardara, past remote mountain bogland lies the pass carved out by old glacial forces. Numerous spots and viewpoints available to pull over and take in the epic scenery. Why not stop into Nancy's for a drink on your way!
- Glenveagh National Park : An hour drive from Donegal town, an absolute gem lies hidden in the bog. Simply walking around of taking a guided tour will not leave you disappointed if you’re looking for a day out in nature.
- Mount Errigal: A wonderful spot for an early morning hike (Weather permitting)
- Donegal Waterbus: Enjoy the views of Donegal Bay from the Donegal Waterbus.
