Shayla’s View

It all began when I moved to a small town in Colorado during my senior year of high school. From the moment I stepped into my geology class, I had a feeling I’d meet someone special. On the first day, I noticed a quiet, shy guy stealing glances at me—Josh. Though he never sat near me or struck up a conversation, fate had other plans. A few months later, thanks to Mr. Adamson’s assigned seating, Josh and I found ourselves side by side. He quickly became my best friend, making my transition to a new school feel a little less overwhelming. On New Year's Eve, fueled by a little liquid courage, Josh sent me message after message, finally confessing his feelings. Meanwhile, I was third-wheeling with my friends Madisyn and Cooper, completely unaware of how much our lives were about to change. A few months later, during my senior cruise in February 2020, our conversations became more frequent. I monopolized my family’s shared Wi-Fi just to text him back, and during one of these late-night chats, Josh told me he loved me—even before we were officially together. The butterflies I felt in that moment were undeniable, and when I returned home, we never stopped talking. As prom season approached, I had a fun promposal planned for Josh, but his curiosity got the best of him. After relentless questioning about my date, I finally gave in and said, “Well, I was going to take you if you’d stop being so nosy.” Sadly, prom was canceled due to COVID-19, but that didn’t stop us from making memories. We spent as much time together as we could—sometimes even sneaking around since my parents thought I was visiting my friend Kailey when, in reality, I was with Josh. On April 19th, Josh officially asked me to be his girlfriend. That summer was filled with daily adventures, but soon, I had to leave for Oklahoma State University, marking the start of our two-year long-distance relationship. Those years were full of late-night FaceTime calls, virtual movie nights, and constant updates about the little details of our lives, proving that no distance could keep us apart. After Josh graduated high school, we moved in together and began our lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma. While he traveled for work, we learned more about each other every day, strengthening our bond and growing together in ways we never imagined. Today, we’re happily engaged, living in Abilene, Texas, sharing a home with our two dogs, Zoey and Boone and two cats, Kiwi and Nugget, and counting down the days until we say I do. We can't wait to celebrate this next chapter with all of you!

Josh’s View

It all began in 2019 when I was a sophomore at Lamar High School. At the start of the school year, we welcomed a new student—Shayla—who just so happened to be in my geology class. At first, she was just another new face, but as time passed, I found myself noticing her more and more. Whether it was her infectious laughter filling the classroom or watching her effortlessly pull off backflips at sporting events, I couldn’t help but be drawn to her. For weeks, all I could think about was how on earth I was supposed to approach someone as incredible as her.Eventually, I worked up the courage to start a conversation. She often sat by my good friend, Javier, in class, so I made sure to be around them as much as possible. Before long, we became great friends, and it didn’t take me long to realize—Shayla wasn’t like anyone I had ever met before. She was kind, confident, and had this undeniable energy about her. I knew she was the one for me.Fast forward to New Year's Eve, just before 2020, I finally let my feelings slip. Whether intentional or not, I called her that night, confessing that I wanted to be with her. Not long after, Shayla left for her senior trip—a cruise with her family. For the first time in months, we weren’t able to talk as often, and I felt her absence more than I expected. Luckily, she managed to get a Wi-Fi package (thanks to Chad!), and she made it clear she was using it just to talk to me. That was when it really hit me—I was completely in love with her. One night, when she had to disconnect from Wi-Fi for a while, I told her those three words for the first time—while completely sober. And to my relief (and excitement), she said it back.As time passed, we only grew closer. Then, COVID-19 hit. While the world seemed to be shutting down, I saw it as an unexpected blessing—it meant I got to spend even more time with Shayla. Our first official date was a movie night watching Pirates of the Caribbean—though to this day, it remains the only one in the series we’ve actually finished!That summer flew by, and soon, Shayla had to leave for Oklahoma State University, marking the beginning of our two-year long-distance relationship. It was one of the biggest challenges we had faced yet, but we tackled it together. We made the most of our time apart with late-night calls, surprise visits, and countdowns to when we’d see each other again. Long-distance isn’t for the faint of heart, but if anything, it proved just how strong our relationship was—and I’m beyond grateful that chapter is behind us.After I graduated, we moved in together and started our life in Stillwater, Oklahoma, learning more about each other every day as I traveled for work. Today, we live in Abilene, Texas, happily sharing our home with our two cats and our dog.On February 15th, during a family vacation in Cozumel, Mexico, with her parents' blessing, I asked Shayla to marry me. And now, here we are—planning our wedding and preparing for forever.
