Shelby and Zach met senior year of high school. Zach had culinary practice in the cafeteria and Shelby also had cheer practice there. Zach was often distracted by the "girl with the legs kicking out the mats" (aka Shelby) and was often getting moved during practice to be less distracted. Shelby and Zach officially met at Cedar Point on senior skip day through a mutual friend. The next week at school Zach asked the friend for Shelby's number. The friend asked Shelby if it was okay to give her number to Zach which Shelby replied "No." Despite that Zach was given a sugar packet with Shelby's phone number written on it. Shelby took a little convincing to go out on a date but they had their first official date to the Wayne County Lightfest in 2017.
