Our Wedding

Shelby and Chace were brought under extraordinary circumstances as college freshmen, on Chace's 19th birthday in April 2017. An underground electrical transformer exploded near their university, cutting power to the dorms until the next morning. Around mid-night a mutual friend had invited Chace to meet Shelby under the auspice of hanging out in the only part of the school still with power. They fell in love immediately, though too shy to admit it right away. They talked until the early hours of the morning.

How They Met 

They spent a year and a half together at the same college before transferring to different schools for the fall of 2018. Their new schools were separated by a three hour bus ride. The distance permeated all aspects of their relationship. It forced them to become resourceful time managers so they could spend less time talking on FaceTime and more time together on the weekends. Chace routinely left from his last class on Friday afternoons and headed to the bus station to go see Shelby. He would not leave her until late into Sunday evenings, getting home around 2am Monday mornings. During one of her visits, Shelby stayed with Chace for nearly two weeks during their junior year. The time they spent together during those two years was remarkable and despite the distance, they grew closer together.

Love, Near and Far 

Shelby and Chace shared their first apartment together, along with her sister Olivia in Charleston, SC on the intersection of George and King streets. It was not a flashy apartment, but it was a hub of parties and fun for the year the three of them lived together. They all watched and cheered the tow trucks in the adjoining parking lot from their small balcony. It was also conveniently located. Shelby was able to use her bicycle to commute while Olivia and Chace were able to walk everywhere. Each of them spent considerable time shopping at Harris Teeter or visiting Chopsticks.

King and George

Olivia moved out, and Shelby and Chace moved to a third floor studio apartment on King Street with an unrivaled view, three sets of French windows, a green couch, and a sleeping nook. This apartment has been by far their favorite. It was the perfect size, had gorgeous features, and was in the perfect location. Shelby was able to continue using her bicycle to commute and Chace easily accessed the bus. In the six years they had spent together by this point, this was the most amount of time they had spent together consistently. They developed new routines together and found new similarities between each other. Crucially, they learned that having an apartment over looking a busy city center street was quite loud. The loudness was offset slightly by living above a friendly pub.

Room with a View

Spring is the rainy season in Charleston, SC. Chace planned to ask Shelby to marry him during the spring because despite the risk of rain, the days are gorgeous. He looked at a decades worth of weather reports trying to predict the likelihood of it raining on the day he popped the question and he was convinced it would not rain on the day. It rained that day. Undeterred, he nervously prepared himself to ask the most important question of his life. He woke Shelby up and convinced her to take a walk in the drizzling weather. They walked through Charleston's waterfront park partially shielded from the rain by a tree canopy. When they were mostly alone, Chace stopped Shelby and nervously knelt into a puddle with his left knee and quietly asked Shelby to marry him. She said yes without hesitation and through tears they embraced in the rain.

She Said "YES"

Four months after getting engaged, Chace and Shelby moved to London, England together for a year. It was a magical year. It took a while for them to settle in, but once they did they were right at home. They lived together in a one bedroom flat south of the Thames in a trendy neighborhood called Bermondsey. It was a quiet residential neighborhood a five minute walk away from an award winning park and a Sainsbury's grocery store. New adventures were available to them in London for the entire year: art museums, street shows, pubs and restaurants, nightclubs, shops, and exquisite public parks. What they enjoyed most, however, was a nightly picnic in their neighborhood park in the spring and summer. Wine and food were cheap and convenient, it would have been rude not to have so many picnics.

Across the Pond

Shelby and Chace are now back in Charleston, taking time to reflect on the next chapter of their journey together. They’re excited to be surrounded by the love of family and friends as they finally say "I do" and begin this beautiful new adventure side by side.
