Mehndi represents the bond of matrimony and is therefore, considered a ‘shagun’. It signifies the love and affection between the couple and their families. Applying mehndi to the bride before the wedding, is one of the oldest Indian traditions. The ceremony, however, entails an elaborate application of mehndi designs on a bride’s hands and feet. As for the groom, a mere token of application of henna is a mark of good omen. Lagna means marriage and Lagna Geet are songs sung for the upcoming wedding. Weddings are joyous social occasions and the music reflects all the emotions associated with the occasion. A number of themes are used to create beautiful poetry which is sung spontaneously in very melodious tunes.

The word 'Sangeet' translates from Sanskrit to ‘sung together’, and is also used to describe a celebratory event during an Indian wedding. This musical night is a celebration of the union of not only the couple but the bonding of both families. This celebration includes dances performed by relatives and friends of the Bride and Groom, songs by the elder female members of the family sung in unison with the bride as the focal point, and an open dance floor to commemorate the festivities for the following days.

Ganesh Sthapan is a first ceremony performed at most hindu wedding traditions. Lord Ganesh is known as God of Obstacle remover. It is an Indian wedding tradition to worship Lord Ganesh before auspicious occasions. Ganesh Sthapan or Puja is mainly performed in Hindu families and is held a day before the wedding to bless the proceedings. Pithi Ceremony symbolizes the cleansing and purification of the bride and groom before the wedding. It's a ritual specifically for good luck and well-wishes. Pithi is similar to haldi ceremony in which a paste of sandalwood, turmeric, saffron, rosewater and perfume is applied to the bride by friends and family at their respective homes.

It is a pre-wedding ritual which is performed to remove all the obstacles and bring happiness and prosperity into the lives of the couple. As it is believed that the stars and the planets have a great influence on our lives, this ceremony is performed to ensure that the Navagrah or 9 planets are aligned for both the bride and the groom in order to live a happy life together. Like the name suggests, Grah means the house and Shanti means peace, thus it means the peace of the house.

With the blessings of parents, family and friends the couple takes 'Mangal Pheras' four circles around the holy fire while chanting mantras depicting oaths to be with each other throughout their lives. The four pheras each signify "Dharma", "Artha", "Kama" and "Moksha" respectively and are the four pillars of a happy married life. After every round, the brother of the bride hands them puffed rice to be offered to sacred fire.
