Historically known for its mines and its shady ladies, Silverton is now a treasure trove of beautiful trails, old ghost towns, abandoned mines, saloons and brothels turned hotels, world class skiing, and the closest thing to the Alps you'll get in North America. The Wild West is still very much alive in this small town.

-Elevation 9,318ft

-Recommend ACCLIMATIZATION (see box 4-08 from the CDC) before coming to this altitude. Spend a night at lower elevation, no alcohol and only mild exercise for first 48 hrs at elevation.

-Drink more water than at sea level

-Drink less alcohol than at sea level

-It's Colorado. prepare for all kinds of weather and drastic temperature swings (20s at night, 60s during day).

-Closest medical clinic/hospital is in Durango 1+ hr away

-Signs of altitude sickness: like a hangover! headache with decreased appetite, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, or vomiting. often starts 2-12 hours at elevation and during first night. can treat with ibuprofen or tylenol. resolves within 12-48 hours.

-Signs of BAD altitude sickness: like intoxication! confused, can't walk straight , drowsy, shortness of breath, cough. need to descend and get treatment.
