Sofia had been visiting the same neighborhood jewelry store for over a decade. It was a comforting constant in her life—where she marked birthdays, graduations, and quiet little moments in between. After returning from college one summer, she stopped by like she always did, never suspecting that this familiar place would be the backdrop of a new beginning. That day, behind the counter, was someone unfamiliar: Rolando. He had recently arrived in Miami from Cuba, hopeful, hardworking, and just starting to find his way. The jewelry store was his first job in a new country. He thought he might build a career as a professional jeweler, imagining a future of precision, craft, and gemstones. What he didn’t imagine was that one customer—with a warm smile and a confident air—would turn his entire life upside down. Sofia handed him a pair of earrings to clean and casually mentioned they were gold. Trusting her, Rolando took them in the back. Moments later, panic set in—the earrings had turned black.
