Catholic Mass FAQ
What is a Nuptial Mass?
A Nuptial Mass is a special Catholic wedding ceremony that takes place during a full Mass, which is a central form of worship in the Catholic Church. It includes Bible readings, prayers, hymns, and the Eucharist (a sacred and visible sign where the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ). The wedding vows are exchanged within the Mass, symbolizing that the marriage is a sacrament—an outward sign of God's grace. It emphasizes that the couple’s union is not just between them but also involves God as a partner in their marriage.
Who can receive the Eucharist?
In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, or what appears as bread and wine, practicing Catholics should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. We kindly ask that our friends and family who are not practicing Catholics in a state of grace remain in their pew and offer quiet prayers and well wishes for us as we found a new family.
Can I attend the ceremony if I’m not a practicing Catholic?
Yes! We welcome all into the celebration of our marriage mass. Some parts of the mass, like participation in Holy Communion, are only open to practicing Catholics in a state of grace. When it comes time for communion, feel free to stay seated or accept a blessing from the priest. Our programs will help you follow along with the celebration of the mass.
What is church appropriate attire?
There is an idea of modesty, respect, solemnity, and joy when approaching the sacrament of the Eucharist. Gentlemen are encouraged to wear slacks and at least a button-down, or dress shirt. Sport coats and suits are also welcome. Hats are not allowed inside the church. Ladies’ dresses and skirts should be floor or tea/midi length but they may also wear slacks. Please also no exposed backs or cleavage when in the church as to show respect. Reserve the color white for the bride.
Will there be a time gap between your Nuptial Mass and reception?
Yes. The Nuptial Mass is expected to end around 3:00 PM, and the reception will begin at the earliest 5:00 PM. It is at most a 30 minute drive to the reception hall, which leaves a time gap in between. The bride, groom, family, and wedding party will be departing to take pictures during this time.
Could you suggest activities to do, places to eat, drink, and see during the time gap?
Yes! If you are a local to Sugar Land or the surrounding Houston area, you are welcome to stop by your home and freshen up or decompress before the start of reception. Otherwise, please navigate to the "Things to Do" tab for suggestions.
