How do I get to Marfa from Detroit?

Most guests will fly from Detroit (DTW) into El Paso International Airport (ELP) — the closest major airport to Marfa. From El Paso, Marfa is about a 2.5- 3 hour drive, and the route is very easy: straight highway driving with beautiful desert views.

Is there a closer airport to Marfa?

Technically yes, but not very practical.

Midland (MAF) and San Antonio (SAT) are alternatives, but both require longer drives (4–6+ hours) and fewer direct flight options. El Paso is by far the most convenient.

Should I rent a car?

Yes. Marfa is a small desert town with very limited public transportation or rideshare options. We recommend renting a car at El Paso Airport for a smooth and flexible trip. Another option is Turo (an easy to navigate rental car app).

What is the drive from El Paso to Marfa like?

It’s scenic, safe, and simple — mostly open highway through West Texas desert and mountains. Expect long stretches without gas stations, so we recommend filling up before leaving El Paso. Last chance to fill up on gas and take a break would be Van Horn, which is about 1.5 hours between El Paso and Marfa.

What if I can't make the travel to Marfa?

We are working on planning a celebration here in Michigan shortly after the wedding, please do not feel obligated to make it. Stay tuned for details :)

What is there to do in Marfa?

Marfa is known for its art, desert views, and small-town charm. Popular attractions include:

The Marfa Lights

Chinati Foundation art installations

Local shops + galleries

Big Bend–style desert scenery

The annual Agave Festival

What should I pack?

Marfa weather can be unpredictable: warm days, cool nights, and very low humidity. We recommend:

Layers for daytime-to-evening temperature changes

Comfortable shoes

Sunscreen (the desert sun is no joke!)

A jacket for nighttime events

Is the altitude or weather something to worry about?

Not usually. Marfa sits at a mild high desert elevation (~4,600 ft). Some people notice slightly thinner air, but it’s not like Denver. The air is very dry, so stay hydrated.

Will there be cell service?

Yes, but it can be patchy in some areas around town or on the drive. Most hotels and rentals offer Wi-Fi.

What are the food options in Marfa?

Marfa has excellent small restaurants, coffee shops, and food trucks. Keep in mind that hours can be quirky — many places close early or take certain days off. We’ll provide a curated food guide to make things easy.

What’s the vibe of the area?

Arts-meets-desert-chic. Think: cowboy boots + sunglasses, adobe buildings, sunsets, stars, and a little bit of weird/quirky magic that makes Marfa, Marfa
