I still remember the night I met Sophie in person for the first time. I was incredibly anxious to meet this girl I’d been talking nonstop and the girl who’d been sending me voice messages of her sing. I cannot express the nerves I had before hand, but those did not last for long. I got there early to reserve a spot in line for us, and after a while I saw a car do a sick job (psyche) of parallel parking across the street from Simon’s.

I cannot describe to you the emotions that rushed through me but I had this absolutely overwhelming urge to hug the woman I saw emerge from that car- thankfully it was Sophie. Even before we got to our spot we were chatting and it was just like seeing an old friend. Never an awkward moment, never felt as though I were talking to a complete stranger. And that’s how the night continued. Dinner flew by and eventually Sophie invited me to her apartment to hang out with her and her friends and play a few games (she subsequently immediately lost against me in Uno on the first date after getting 5 +4 cards stacked on her. I will never let her live this down.)

That time with her and her friends went great and soon we explored downtown Des Moines with them. We eventually got stranded and talked more and more and I kept on thinking about how no matter the conversation, it was never awkward. It was never forced. I was never nervous to speak what I truly felt. I remember we finally got back to the car and we just stood there for a moment. We kissed each other and that was that. It’s been two years and not a moment has been dull, and every moment has been the best one in my life so far because I met Sophie.
