Our Wedding

We met seven years ago on stage when we played husband and wife. So, it's only fitting that we're here now. Except the characters were Russian in that play, and the proposal happened in a diner, but still. While on stage, Hunter (Sergei) knelt down, while Steph (Galina) held a cold french fry, disbelievingly. As she stared at the costume ring in his hand, she wondered what it would feel like for the girl he proposed to one day, never imagining it would be her. We saved each other in so many ways, and we still do every day. While the pandemic shut down our world, it proved to be when our love truly started to bloom. We were long distance for the first 2 1/2 years of our relationship. The distance was tough, but it was never really work. We hear all the time how difficult long distance relationships are, but ours was just easy. We made sense from the beginning, and after Hunter completed the national tour of Oklahoma!, it made even more sense for him to pack up and move in with "Sacramento- famous" Stephanie Altholz (Hunter wrote that, not me). The way he fit into Sacramento, how we fit into each other's families, (and our equal commitment to bits), was further proof we belonged together. As the years went on, and we added to our family of fur-babies (Toaster, Finnegan, and Bacon), Steph started to realize that she wanted to be the one that Hunter would kneel in front of to propose, and Hunter blurted out to his Mom in conversation that he was thinking of that very thing. Five months after that phone call, he did propose, with his Great-Grandmother's ring (gifted from his Grammy). Only this time we weren't onstage (though ducks were watching) and Steph wasn't holding cold french fries (instead she was in the midst of a hefty bite of chicken salad). It was the easiest choice we ever made. Every day of that play they were first in together, The Last Match, Steph would teach Hunter a Russian phrase. Some were important, like, "Kakaya katastrofa?" (What a disaster!), and some were less important, "Zdes' yest wi-fi?" (Is there wi-fi?), but one was the most important of all, "Ya lyublyu tebya" (I love you). Turns out we meant it.
