The Tuckett Mansion / Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Canada

Designed by architect James Balfour and completed in 1896 for George Elias Tuckett, founder of Tuckett Tobacco and the 27th mayor of Hamilton.

In 1915 the Tuckett Mansion was used as Officers’ Quarters for the Third Canadian Contingent and in 1916 for the Canadian Red Cross effort.

Scottish Rite leaders bought the property in 1920 as a future location for the Scottish Rite in Hamilton. The Cathedral, considered to be one of the best of its type in North America, was opened and dedicated on the 7th of May 1923.

Today the Scottish Rite Club remains and the building hosts many of its fraternity functions.

The beautiful architecture, including imposing red stone, 50-ft ceilings, stunning stained glass and a Buckingham Palace style iron fence, make the building an in demand location for film and TV productions. Over 300 projects have been filmed there since 2003, including movies Crimson Peak, IT: Chapter Two, Longing, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City and TV shows Murdoch Mysteries, The Boys, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Kennedys, Frankie Drake Mysteries, The Hardy Boys, The Good Witch.
