Can’t wait to celebrate and explore Guatemala with our closest friends and family :)
Are there any recommended flights?
From MSP, American and Delta have traditionally had some wonderful options! However, in a quick google flights dive, the Delta flights don’t appear nearly as budget friendly as they have been in the past. So, I’d probably lean toward the American Airlines options. Our favorite flights are the options that leave early morning and arrive in GUA around 12:30-1pm. Unfortunately there is always going to be a layover somewhere :/ Flights home are similar, but opposite, leave in the afternoon and get home late evening. We like this because we get to utilize half of the travel day for something fun.
See the bottom of the page for current screen shots of decent options
When should I plan on arriving?
The wedding is on Saturday, the 21st of February. We will be having a welcome dinner for all out of towners, on the evening of Friday the 20th. So, if able, arriving on the 19th or 20th would work wonderfully!
How will I get from the Airport to Antigua?
Traveling to Guatemala, particularly to Antigua, may be a unique endeavor for many, especially those who have not spent much time outside of the US. It is our hope to make this as easy as possible for those willing to make the trip to join us for this lovely occasion. We will be asking you to share travel details with us so that we can arrange transportation from the airport to Antigua; we don’t need anyone worrying about navigating Guatemala City traffic :)
Okay, now I know when I should arrive, how long should I stay?
Great question! It is really up to you, but we would love to make your trip worthwhile and have you join us for some more Guatemala adventures post wedding! Current thinking is that we would stay in Antigua between the 20th-23rd, then travel up to Lake Atitlan, and stay there between the 24th-26th/27th. Lake Atitlan is about 3 hours from Guatemala City, so we can plan on driving back in order for everyone to make flights, etc. If you’re unable to join us for anything after the wedding and need to get back home, no worries at all, we’re just happy you could join us at all :)
We can also change course and go somewhere else for the second half of the week! We could go to the Puerto, which is the west coast of Guatemala, about 1.5-2 hours from Antigua. Or we could catch a domestic flight to Tikal so that we can explore some Mayan ruins. Or even, take a long drive to the Caribbean coast and stay in Rio Dulce. Once we narrow down who is going to be able to make it, we can take a final vote :)
Is there a hotel with a block of rooms reserved for us to book?
We have blocked rooms at a couple hotels in the area that can be found in the travel section. However, we have also listed some recommended hotels/airbnb’s, also listed in the travel tab. We’d recommend the Airbnb’s to get a more unique and authentic stay and the opportunity to spend time with your close friends in an entirely new part of the world :)
How should I pay for things in Guatemala?
For the vast majority of places we’ll be going, utilizing a credit card will be the easiest option. However, having a little cash never hurt! We always just withdraw from a local ATM, just be aware if they are charging a % fee or flat fee. Depending on how much you take out, it could depend on which is better.
To make the math easier the average exchange rate is around $1/Q7.5. Or $20/Q150.
And if you’re wondering what the Q stands for, the national currency in Guatemala is the Quetzal.
