Our Story

A Friday in Burbank

Picture of A Friday in Burbank

As told from Steve's perspective:

So, I had been visiting California all week, fresh off of defending my thesis in Santa Cruz. It was nice to have one last hurrah to see all of the friends that I had made while out in California for grad school. My final stop before flying to my new home in Alexandria, VA, was Burbank, a city near Los Angeles (LA people know this isn't true, but it feels true for those of us who are from small states like Massachusetts). My friend Rochelle had picked me up from the home of my other friend, Michelle, and we headed to Burbank. We got tickets to see the "Overwatch World Cup Qualifiers", which was an in-person show where you watched people play video games competitively. I swear, it was way more fun than I made it sound. Anyways, Rochelle, being a functioning member of society, actually had a job that she was committed to that morning, so she instructed me to save her seat while she worked, and I dutifully did so. Well, at least until I saw Su walk in.

The usher escorted Su near my general area and being the quick thinker that I am, I told him that the seat next to me was free. Technically, it was! Okay, so she sat next to me and I proceeded to talk at her for about an hour until Rochelle texted me to meet her outside for lunch. I ate lunch as fast as humanly possible and rushed Rochelle to get back inside so I could awkwardly regain Su's attention (whose name, I still didn't know by the way). Rochelle complied, because she's the best, and then she even played wingwoman for me. At this point, I think Su had been sufficiently worn down by my offense and before we all left, I said we should get a group picture (see above). We got one and then I told Su that I needed her phone number so that way I could share the photo with her. Su gave me a quick glance and I'm 95% sure that she said, "...smooth?" (this is called "rizz", for all of you taking notes at home). So, then I told her I was moving across the country tomorrow morning, but she should totally shoot me a text if she ever wants to do an activity together.

Well, somehow it worked, because a month later I was back on a flight to LA to visit her in person! Five years of a distance relationship later, we're now saying "I do" in Bellevue, WA with all of you present.

As told from Su's perspective (Steve totally did NOT write this):

This all started when my high school friend Dave gave me a ticket for the Overwatch World Cup Qualifiers. We had recently become reconnected through this shared game after years of living far away from one another (after high school, I moved from Toronto, Canada all the way to Santa Monica, CA). Dave had meant to go, but he forgot to buy the plane tickets to and from northern California (again, people from little states may fail to understand how necessary this is). Anyways, I gladly accepted the gift and took some time Friday to go check it out. I had been competing at a late-night hockey match the night prior, so I didn't bother with the usual hair and make-up routine. I mean, what are the odds of running into the love of your life the next day? Anyways, I show up to the venue and the most handsome and dreamy man I've ever met introduced himself to me and now we're getting married!
