“If you ever want to do anything after work let me know.”

The day my parents dropped me off at my very first big girl apartment in Foley, my mom stated out of the blue, “who knows? I bet you meet someone at work.” I instantly scoffed. “NO!” I wanted to be professional after all. Little did I know, mothers are always right. When I was in high school, I remember writing a letter to God about what I wanted in my future spouse. I prayed he would be blonde, athletic, beachy, outdoorsy, and a man who loved his family endlessly and kindly. I prayed my husband would be kind, patient, and take an interest in things that weren’t ordinary. Back then, no one ticked all of the boxes. And then, I met Wesley Green. Flash forward a few weeks of looks here and there where I prayed the beach boy would notice me—he did. You can say it was love at first sight for me for SURE. Instantly I knew he was the one for me. And that was just from looking at the back of his head, HAHA! I learned his name was Wesley, he went to Auburn, and was from a small town in Georgia called Cartersville. I learned he liked the same offbeat things I did and I melted into a puddle and blushed when I made a joke and he said, “I’m so glad you knew that.” Things were going well but then a hurricane was going to hit. I remember my mom asking me to “instagram message that boy you like from work and see if you can stay together just until the storm rides out.” Again, I said, “Mom, NO!” Long story short, when we went back to work that weekend they paired up a group of three of us “young ones” as they stated. I was ecstatic—not to walk up 21 flights of stairs each way and back— but to spend time with “work babe” as I referred to him with my friends. At the end of the first week, we exchanged numbers. At the end of the second week, I borrowed a movie I had no interest in just to have an excuse to keep talking to him. At the end of the third week, he officially asked me on a date where we drove around a nearby neighborhood talking about our childhoods and how great it would be to live somewhere like the houses we were seeing before grabbing pasta and sharing a basket of bread at a local Italian place. Spoiler: We ended up buying one of those houses two years later. We went on one date and we were never apart after that. Together we’ve helped each other overcome health obstacles, welcomed new family members, mourned the loss of family members, adopted each other’s family as our own, rescued the lights of our lives known as Enzo, Macho, and Arno, and bought a house and made it our own. We can’t wait to celebrate the next chapter of our lives! This Grass Just Got Green-er!
