Our Story

Our Story

Not all that long ago, there would have been little reason to think we would ever meet, much less fall in love and spend the rest of our lives together. Jason was clerking for a judge in Nevada with every intention of moving back to Washington D.C. For her part, Summer had left Baylor and moved back home to Colorado to be closer to her family.

But, as Proverbs reminds us, “a man’s steps are from the Lord; how then can he understand his path?”

Jason ended up clerking with a married couple from DFW while two of his close law school friends ended up in Dallas. This coalition lobbied him enough to execute “the Dallas option” and accept an offer to join Gibson Dunn’s Dallas office in September 2022. Summer found herself visiting friends in Dallas regularly, so much so that she found a way to move her life and career in hospitality to Dallas earlier that same year.

But being in the same city was only the first step. Both of us quickly found wonderful but different churches in the area, limiting the chances of meeting. That was until Summer started serving in the junior high ministry at her church with Matt and Carissa Scorcio. The three hit it off and quickly became dear friends. And Matt just so happened to be a senior associate at Gibson Dunn. Jason got to know Matt more through work and eventually met Carissa at a Gibson Dunn Christmas party in December 2022. Carissa and Matt started scheming, and soon enough Jason had Summer’s phone number and was asking her out on a blind date (well, as blind as a date in 2023 can be).

Our first date was at Las Palmas, a local Tex-Mex restaurant. Nerves were present on both sides, but we enjoyed all of the usual first date conversations and quickly set up another date to follow. Soon enough we were off and running, with many of those early dates including late nights listening to music in a parked car and getting to know each other more.

And, after about 4 weeks of dating, Jason asked Summer to officially be his girlfriend ... which it only took Summer about 24 hours to accept! Time together increased, steady rhythms such as a weekly movie night took hold (favorite movie: Remember the Titians; least favorite: Barbie), and just like that the couple was merging more and more of their lives together.

Those early phases of the relationship included some special days. Summer took charge of celebrating Jason’s birthday, which included church, a brunch with friends at Smoky Rose, a beautiful dinner at Monarch, and ultimately an Ed Sheeran concert at Cowboys Stadium.

But the simple days were equally sweet—enjoying time reading in a hammock, walking White Rock Lake or the Katy Trial, finding restaurants that became our spots, and having “tea dates” over facetime when work and life made it too difficult to see each other in person.

The relationship steadily progressed until the sixth month anniversary, which brought us back to Las Palmas to celebrate. It was there that we had a conversation about our future—about how we wanted to get married and take steps towards that end. We joined 'Union,' a pre-marital class and started talking about the various aspects of married life: communication styles, finances, and in-laws. But the class centered on God’s vision for marriage and spent a lot of time reflecting on Ephesians 5’s call for husbands to love their wives, for wives to respect their husbands, and for the couple to emulate the relationship between Christ and the church. This class confirmed what we already knew, so Jason began ring shopping and planning the proposal.

And on December 16th—10 months and 11 days after that first date at Las Palmas—the time came for Jason to ask Summer to spend the rest of their lives together. He planned a whole “Jason and Summer day,” which included a spa day, and getting ready for a “fancy dinner” that evening. That afternoon, Jason picked Summer up from her apartment and under the not-so-subtle guise of killing time before the reservation, convinced her go on a walk. And after the really not-so-subtle move of making Summer turn off the Katy Trail and onto a secluded forest path, the gig was up. We turned the corner to a bed of rose pedals, a bouquet of Summer's favorite flowers, and framed pictures documenting each stage of the relationship. With the ring in hand and his roommate hiding in a grassy hill for photos, Jason proposed. The couple celebrated privately at a dinner and then Jason took Summer to a surprise party at Matt and Carissa’s house with thirty of their friends to celebrate the engagement.

Being fiancées has been a beautiful season. We visited Jason's family for Christmas in California, then celebrated Summer’s birthday with her family by skiing in Colorado. As sweet as being fiancées is, being husband and wife will be much sweeter. We can’t wait to enter into this covenant and celebrate with friends and family in May.
