Things to do if you're visiting from out of town!
Visit the beach (dependent on the weather)! Santa Monica and Venice Beach are around 20 min from LAX. Santa Monica Pier is pictured and geared more so towards young families.
Venice Beach is what you may think of when you imagine LA beaches. There is a boardwalk with street merchants (don't accept CD's from people when they offer them to you). You can see muscle beach and the local skaters at the skate park.
Cool modern museum! Check out their website ahead of time to reserve tickets and to reserve tickets to a special light area. Most museums in LA are free, including this one but occasionally they have an artist feature area which is a separate ticket at a cost.
Go to a comedy show! The Comedy Store is listed, but Laugh Factory is right around the corner in West Hollywood too. These are the two most famous comedy venues in LA and around the U.S. Check out their websites to see who is playing and what shows are available!

Getty Villa is technically a museum. However, the best part about it is that it's a pretty outdoors space (as you can see in the picture). Free!
Another cool museum in LA! This is connected to Getty Villa but the two are in different areas in LA.
Drive up to Griffith! Parking can be a hassle (especially on the weekends). There is a small parking lot at the top and then parking on the side of the street leading up to it. From the top, you can see the Hollywood sign. I've heard the planetarium show is cool, which you can get tickets to ahead of going. Then you can tell your friends you've been to that place featured in the movie, La La Land!
See a show at the Hollywood Bowl! Use the website listed to check out the shows available
Giant botanical garden

They also have a tearoom where you can have high tea (pricey, but a fun experience). Reservations required ahead of time
