Travel

Escalante, Utah

Escalante is a quaint tourist town with a population of only 813 residents. The town sits at an elevation of 5,820 feet in the heart of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks.

If you've never been to a high elevation desert, you can expect sweeping desert vistas and winding roads that lead from canyon depths to mountain highs. While the natural landscape is stunning, travel can be tricky. It's a good idea to check out Escalante before making plans to understand what's available in town and plan accordingly.

Flying?

We suggest flying to Las Vegas, NV (cheapest rates, but 5 hours drive) or St. George, UT (higher prices, but 3.5 hour drive). Salt Lake City is another option (about 6 hour drive). Car rental available at all airports, we can coordinate group rentals. Pro tip - download maps before leaving large areas and striking off to Escalante, service will be limited.

Driving?

You'll have to drive through mountain roads which can be hard on your vehicle. Get your brakes and oil checked before embarking. Cell phone service will be spotty, with infrequent wifi options, so remember to download maps in advance. The views are breathtaking, so plan time to pull off for photos. Don't drive distracted or tired, highway lighting is extremely limited and wildlife is prevalent on roadways - ranging from cows to deer and even elk. Check ahead for lodging along the way, pack water & snacks. Call or text with questions!

Lodging?

For longer stays, we suggest considering lodging that includes a kitchen, as food options in town are limited. Stays that offer kitchens include Circle D Motel, which we now have block rooms available at a deeply discounted price. See below for more details. There are also numerous Airbnb rentals. If you're traveling with pets, consider Escalante Outfitters Cabins (shared group restrooms & showers), Circle D Motel, Entrada Lodge, or Of Land Escalante Tiny Houses.

Dining?

As mentioned, food options are limited. For certain the Escalante Outfitters will offer coffee & light pastries for breakfast, as well as pizza, salad, and sandwiches for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Magnolia's Kitchen serves breakfast & lunch. The 4th West Pub opens daily at 5pm and only welcomes patrons over 21+ years old for dine-in service, but accepts to-go orders. The Pub menu boasts burgers, paninis, and other bar style fare. A couple food trucks may also be available.

Groceries?

If you have dietary restrictions, it is highly suggested that you pick up groceries in a larger town before driving into Escalante. The Griffin Grocery is a mom and pop store that does carry general groceries, but selections are fairly basic.
