What’s the weather like?
Antigua has warm, tropical weather year-round with temperatures averaging 75–85°F (24–29°C). The wetter season is June to November.
What currency is used in Antigua & Barbuda?
The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), but U.S. dollars are widely accepted. However, you may receive change in XCD. Most major credit cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, but having some cash for smaller vendors is helpful.
What Should We Pack?
-Lightweight, breathable clothing (it’s warm year-round!)
-Swimwear and cover-ups for the beach
-Comfortable sandals and walking shoes
-A light jacket or sweater for the evenings
-Reef-safe sunscreen (important for protecting marine life)
-Bug spray, especially if you’re planning outdoor activities
-Any necessary medications and travel-size first-aid kit
-Snacks for picky eaters or special dietary needs (some brands may not be available)
Do I need to rent a car?
It depends on your plans! Taxis are available, but they can be expensive. If you plan to explore outside of your accommodations, a rental car might be more convenient. Keep in mind that Antigua drives on the left side of the road.
What kind of food can I expect?
Antigua offers a mix of local Caribbean flavors and international cuisine. You’ll find everything from fresh seafood and jerk chicken to Italian, Asian, and American-style restaurants. Local dishes to try include:
Fungee & Pepperpot (the national dish)
Saltfish (Nolan Loves) & Johnny Cakes (Tanya's Fav)
Antiguan Black Pineapple (a local specialty) (any local fruit is a must!)
Seafood – especially lobster, red snapper, and conch
Are there grocery stores on the island?
Epicurean Fine Foods & Pharmacy (largest, with a mix of local and imported goods)
First Choice Supermarket (smaller but well-stocked)
There are also local markets and convenience stores in different villages. If you have food allergies or specific dietary needs, you may want to bring certain items with you.
What activities are available in Antigua?
Some popular options include:
Beach hopping (there are 365 beaches!)
Snorkeling & scuba diving
Exploring historic sites like Nelson’s Dockyard
Sailing or catamaran cruises
Hiking to Shirley Heights for breathtaking views
Visiting the local markets for souvenirs and handcrafted goods
Are there any safety concerns?
Antigua is generally safe for tourists, but as with any destination:
Be aware of your surroundings and avoid isolated areas at night.
Keep an eye on personal belongings, especially at the beach.
Use official taxis or rental cars for transportation.
