Travel

Information about La Ventana, Transportation, Lodging, Security, Communication, Weather, etc.

La Ventana started out as a small fishing village and it has grown into a mecca for kiteboarding and windsurfing enthusiasts. There is one paved road, no stoplights, and sometimes you have to avoid cattle in the road.

Getting to La Ventana

You will find many options flying to San Jose del Cabo (SJD). All major airlines fly here from most major airports in the US. SJD is just under 2 hours away by car/shuttle to La Ventana.

Airport to La Ventana Shuttle Service:

From Cabo, there are several shuttle services to La Ventana if you don’t want to rent a car. Shuttles can be found here: https://www.theventanaview.com/directory-business/categories/transportation/

Car Rental:

Most major car rental companies are represented at the SJD airport. People have had good experiences with National Rental car booked through Expedia, but there are other choices as well. Make sure you get the mandatory Mexican insurance with your rental price -- it can be a surprise at the rental counter if you add it after your reservation. If you choose to rent a car it is very important not to drive at night between the airport and La Ventana. There is a very high risk of hitting cattle that wander into the road, plus there can be devastating potholes from summer rains. There are no street lights and cattle don’t wear reflective vests :). Once in La Ventana, you can drive at night no problem.

Safety and Security

La Ventana is a very safe town. We have been bringing our children here for over 25 years with no issues. While there is no concern about personal safety, there has been an increase in theft over the past several years. If you lock doors and don’t leave valuables in your car you shouldn’t have any problems.

Communication

Cell coverage is very good and most homes have reliable internet. If you need to work please check with your lodging manager about the internet at your specific place. It's also a good idea to check with your cell provider to determine if your phone will work here and if you will be charged roaming fees.

Money

Some places take credit cards but most restaurants do not. There are 3 ATMs in town but they are somewhat unreliable. Most businesses will accept US Dollars but you will get a poor exchange rate. It may be wise to get some Pesos from your bank in the USA before you travel. DO NOT USE THE MONEY EXCHANGE COUNTER AT SJD. Their exchange rate is horrible.

Weather

The weather in October is warm and balmy (85-92 high and 68-75 low), and can be breezy some days. The Sea of Cortez is also very warm, clear and full of sea life. There are many ways to enjoy the beauty of La Ventana (see Things to Do section).

If you are not staying on the beach, you may want your rental to have air conditioning.

Food and dining

There are many dining options and 2 small grocery stores that carry enough products to feed you while you're here. On the flip side, there are no Ubers/taxis, nightclubs or traditional hotels. There is a very helpful website where locals and seasonal residents share information: www.theventanaview.com
