Banh mi is one of the best-known and most beloved Vietnamese dishes. A baguette is split lengthwise and filled with an endless combination of ingredients like cold cuts, grilled meats, liver pate, cucumber slices, pickled vegetables, and cilantro. It’s a light sandwich that’s typically eaten as a snack. Walking around Saigon you’ll see dozens of carts with signs selling banh mi – it’s actually hard to go more than a block without seeing one – so it’s never hard to find. Banh mi Huynh Hoa, Banh mi Bay Ho, Banh mi Tuyen Ký are some popular local banh mi brands in Saigon.
Broken rice ("cơm tấm" ~ / kom taam/) is the grains of rice that break from their sheaths when farmers harvest the rice or are broken during transport. It is usually served with grilled pork (either ribs or shredded), thinly shredded pork mixed with cooked and thinly shredded pork skin over broken rice, egg meatloaf or omelet, plus various greens and pickled vegetables. Com tam Kieu Giang, Com tam Cu Lao are some popular local food stores in Saigon.
