Tolu's version:
I had gone for a corporate award event with my colleagues from work. One of us, Leke had just relocated so we recorded a video and sent it to him. He later posted it on his status and that was it, or so I thought.
A few days later, Leke told me that one of his friends had asked for my number and asked what I thought about it. After about a week of constant calls from Leke and my dancing around the question Leke made me a promise. ‘Tolu please, this guy is really disturbing me, just talk to him once and I promise, if you’re not interested I will make sure he never bothers you again.’ So I said okay.
A few days later, Siji introduced himself by text. I told him we’d just be friends, an idea he quickly and clearly turned down.
I soon found out that there were one too many things about him and I that could not be mere coincidence. Not too long after we first said hello he asked me out. Worried it was too fast, I made him wait before I gave him my answer and here we are today. He's still my friend, but not 'just' my friend.
Siji's version:
I had been praying for clarity on some things including who I’d marry. Sometime in November, for whatever reason I started scrolling through WhatsApp statuses and a video on Leke’s status caught my eye. It was a short video and there were about 3 ladies in it. All Tolu said in the video was ‘Hi Leke’ but I knew there was just something there.
I started pestering Leke to ask about who she was and how he could connect us. I’m sure he was surprised because until then I hadn’t seemed interested in people I was introduced to. Plus, she was in Nigeria at the time while I was in the US and I had no interest in long distance.
With some effort, she finally gave me her number. She tried to friendzone me but I was quite clear from the onset that I wasn’t looking for just friendship.
Some weeks later, I asked her out and after waiting for an answer, she finally said yes. The rest as they say is history.
