August 1, 2024
9:00 AM–1:00 PM
Gurdwara Sahib Ampang
65 Jalan Hulu Kelang, Ampang Jaya, Selangor, 68000, Malaysia
Attire: Modest clothing - any colour other than black
The Wedding ceremony will take place in the Gurdwara Sahib (a Sikh temple). This temple is a place of religious worship for the Sikh people.
In the Gurudwara, it is customary to adhere to modest clothing rules, which typically involve covering one's head with a headscarf for the women, turban or a bandanna for the men as a sign of respect. Wearing conservative and neat attire that covers shoulders and legs, and refraining from donning revealing or flashy clothing out of reverence for the sacred space and the spiritual nature of the environment. Covering of the head in the temple’s compound is a must.
The wedding ceremony is a long process, however the actual “tom weds vee” part usually lasts for an hour and will begin after 10.00am. This is the important attendance bit (you can see the description of the ceremony in the itinerary below). There is absolutely no serving of alcohol or meat, as only vegetarian meals will be served during breakfast and lunch (they are yummy, you will enjoy it).
You can always look for Sonia (Veena’s sister) if you have any concerns on the day. Feel free to ask any of Veena’s family members if you are unsure of anything.
Let us know if you have any specific questions!

Anand Karaj (Wedding Ceremony)
The Anand Karaj ceremony is a sacred Sikh wedding ritual that translates to "Blissful Union." Held in a Gurudwara, the ceremony signifies the spiritual and emotional union of two souls. It involves the reading of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy scripture, by the Granthi (religious leader). The couple circumambulates the Guru Granth Sahib, symbolizing their commitment to a life journey together. The ceremony emphasizes equality, simplicity, and devotion, reflecting the core principles of Sikhism.
The couple, seated before the Guru Granth Sahib (The Sikh Holy Scripture), listens attentively to the spiritual verses, signifying their commitment to a lifelong partnership. The Laavan, four hymns representing different stages of married life, are sung during the ceremony, and the couple completes a symbolic circumambulation around the holy scripture, sealing their marital bond. Anand Karaj emphasizes equality, simplicity, and devotion, embodying the core tenets of Sikhism in celebrating the union of two souls on their journey together.
