Q + A

A note from Drew

Chautauqua is gorgeous (just like my future wife). Offering a little something for everyone, we are excited for you to join us in enjoying everything this New York hidden gem has to offer. On the "Things to Do" tab we have included a list of fun recommendations should you decide to arrive in Chautauqua before the ceremony on Saturday, and have some extra time to spare. From outdoor recreation and watersports to world-class art and cultural programming, there is plenty to explore across CHQ. Below is a collection of Q+As to assist with your planning, but if you have additional questions, let us know. We look forward to celebrating with everyone on September 7th, 2024!

What time should I arrive to the ceremony?

We are asking all guests to please arrive at 12p to allow ample time for parking and then walking over to the Hall of Philosophy. The Chautauqua Institution is a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the scenery should you arrive early.

What is the easiest way to get to and from the wedding venue(s)?

If you are coming in from out of town, the easiest way to get to and from our wedding venues is going to be to rent a car. Chautauqua is a beautiful lake in a more remote location so there will be limited Ubers going to and from.

Is parking available at the wedding venue?

All wedding guests will be required to park in the South Parking Lot located at the top of Janes Avenue. The Athenaeum Hotel, and Hall of Christ have limited parking spaces available, which are to be reserved for handicapped guests.

What is the dress code?

Creative black tie.

What is Creative Black Tie attire?

Creative black tie is a dress code that allows you to slightly tone down your formal attire by adding hints of your own personal style. When a formal event calls for a creative black tie dress code, it means you don’t have to adhere to the traditional black tie standards in which men are expected to wear a specific tuxedo shirt paired with a black suit, and women are expected to wear evening dresses. For women, we encourage formal gowns but you can jazz it up with sequins, patterns and bolder colors such as jewel tones. Alternatively, if you're not into formal dresses, a pantsuit or even dressed up cocktail dress is okay. For men, we encourage you to get creative! That can look like pairing your suit with a shirt that is a different color than white, or a colored/patterned bowtie.

Can I take pictures during the ceremony to post on social media?

We are asking all guests to please refrain from posting anything on social media during the ceremony.

Will the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception take place indoors or outdoors?

The ceremony will take place at the Hall of Philosophy at the Chautauqua Institution. The Hall of Philosophy is an open-air outdoor structure. Weather permitting, the cocktail hour will be an indoor/outdoor affair directly on the Chautauqua Lake waterfront at the Harbor Hotel. The wedding reception will take place indoors, in the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel ballroom.

Will there be a time gap between your wedding ceremony and reception?

There will be a gap between the end of our ceremony and reception. Cocktail hour will begin at 3:30pm. In the meantime, we encourage you to walk around the Chautauqua Institution grounds and take your time getting to the next venue. We recommend for about 30 minutes of travel time between the institution and the Harbor Hotel.

Will transportation be provided from the Chautauqua Institution to the Harbor Hotel?

No - we are asking all guests to arrange their own transportation from the wedding ceremony to the reception.

Is parking available at the reception venue?

Yes! There is ample parking in the Harbor Hotel parking lot.

Will there be an open bar at the reception?

Yes! Drinks are on us for the evening. We look forward to celebrating with everyone.

Are children allowed at the wedding?

We love your children, but due to space restrictions we cannot accommodate guests under age 18 (unless specified on your RSVP) on our wedding day. We appreciate you understanding!

Is there a recommended hotel/room block for guests?

Yes! Under the travel page there is a list of close hotels in the area. We recommend taking advantage of our discounted room block rate with the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel as it is the same location as the reception.

Do you have a wedding registry?

Yes! There is a tab here with our up to date registry.

Can I bring my gift to the wedding?

Your presence is present enough, but should you wish to bring a gift to our wedding, there will be a gift table for your convenience. We are asking that all larger gifts please be shipped to our home as opposed to bringing them to the wedding, as we will be flying home after the festivities.

When will the reception end?

The reception is planned to end at 11pm.

What is the appropriate response if a complete stranger were to shout "Go Bills!" to you as they pass?

The correct response is to shout back "Go Bills!" Keep in mind, you are in Bills country....
