Tyler and Nora met on the very first day of medical school, when they were seated right next to each other at the “White Coat Ceremony.” They chatted throughout the ceremony and Rafi Wartan even has pictures of Tyler walking across the stage right in front of Nora, their first official picture together. When it came time to recite the Oath of Geneva, Tyler and Nora leaned in together to read it off the program they were sharing. From that moment on, their paths through medical school were intertwined.
Throughout the first year of medical school, they remained friends peripherally. Tyler was always impressed by Nora’s willingness to pipe up during group discussions and Nora with Tyler’s deep bellowing voice and distinguished eyebrows. They were certainly beginning to notice each other more when whatever may have been blossoming was cut short by COVID. Almost a year later, after months of online classes and staying within their own quarantine bubbles, restrictions on campus began to loosen and the library re-opened. Two of the first people to stake their claim on the newly accessible study space were Tyler and Nora. Every so often, Tyler would stop by Nora’s study cubicle to chat and vice-versa. Eventually, these brief conversations evolved into walks around campus for a much-needed study break. After they both completed the board exam, Nora instigated a group of friends to go out in Chicago and celebrate. The next day, Tyler asked Nora out. She hesitated at first, but his eyebrows proved too powerful and she came to her senses. Tyler knew he had one shot, one opportunity, to seize everything he ever wanted and pulled out all the stops. Their first date started with dinner in Lincoln Park at a Lebanese family-owned restaurant, followed by viewing the Navy Pier fireworks out on Lake Michigan. The night was capped with dancing and drinks at a local favorite, “The Bassment,” where Tyler may or may not know a guy.
From that night on, the rest is history. They experienced countless adventures in Chicago throughout the rest of medical school, successfully navigated matching together for residency, got engaged, and started their new lives together as resident physicians at Emory in Atlanta.
