Lucas and Valerie met as a thirteen year old piano teacher and a nine year old piano student about thirteen years ago. These kids were simply teacher and student all the way up until Lucas left for college, blissfully unaware of the humongous crush Valerie had on him.

They reconnected simply as friends the year before Valerie went off to college. She, having given up any hope that it would ever work out between them, was happy enough to have Lucas in her life in any little way, while he began to see her in a new light. From the little girl who wouldn't practice scales to a young woman who brightened up his cloudy life. It was Lucas' turn now to have a secret crush.

However, instead of not telling anyone for about five years, Lucas confessed to Valerie his growing affections and was shocked to hear that she had felt the same. While they did not begin to court immediately, since Valerie was now a state away, the summer after her first semester they officially began their relationship in 2021 on her birthday.

After a courtship of three years Lucas asked Valerie to marry him outside of their home church. Sitting at a bench, by the playground, in the sunset, on Holy Thursday, March twenty-eighth, 2024, almost as soon as she got home for Easter break, Valerie said "yes!" to marrying Lucas
