Vanessa and Jordan met through OkCupid back in late November in 2015, when Jordan sent her a message during a nihilistic episode. He'd been on the app for a few months, telling himself, "If she messages back, great. If she doesn't, that's fine too!" Little did they both know that first message was the start of a great conversation, bonding over their love of anime, Pokémon, and interest in Japanese culture.
They eventually went on their first date, meeting in Seattle's Chinatown-International District at Uwajimaya. They started with dinner at Maneki, a small Japanese restaurant, and then made their way to the Rhein Haus, a German bar in Seattle. They had great conversation that naturally flowed all night, with never a dull moment the whole time. They drank through basically the entire menu, getting sloshed in the process but managed to stay in the moment, learning about each other. They ended the night at 2AM, taking a nice walk through Capitol Hill for fresh air and to clear our drunken heads. When it came time to get home, Vanessa helped Jordan, who at this point could barely walk into or communicate with his Uber.
After getting home, Jordan thought he botched the date, but Vanessa had a great time (she's never felt so comfortable with someone else like she had that night). They met next on the day after Christmas, became a couple just before the new year. Eventually, Jordan proposed to Vanessa on May 18th, 2018. The two decided to put off their wedding until they had graduated and found jobs, and are now officially getting married on April 23rd, 2023.
