If you plan on making this a whole weekend event, Grand Rapids and nearby areas have plenty to do! We have compiled a list of our favorite locations in the area. Try the sushi at Sushi Yama or grab a beer at Founders Brewing Co. You can also enjoy sculptures and botanical gardens at Frederik Meijer Gardens. The Grand Rapids Public Museum and Art Museum are both less than ten minutes away, or drive 30 minutes west to visit Holland during their Tulip Time festival! More info on each below:
Located just 30 minutes west from the wedding venue, Holland is perhaps most known for its Tulip Time festival. Experience Dutch culture in the form of parades, art, food, and tulips, all right by the beautiful Lake Michigan! Tulip Time 2025 is happening 05/03/25 through 05/11/25.
Frederik Meijer Gardens is home to tons of art and other attractions, including a butterfly garden, tropical conservatory, Japanese garden, and a HUGE bronze horse.
You can’t visit Beer City without checking out Founders Brewing Co! Our two favorite beers are Green Zebra (sea salt watermelon) and Rubaeus (raspberry). If that’s not your style, Founders is probably best known for their All Day IPA. Don’t forget to try their BBQ pulled pork mac and cheese!
Located in the quiet basement of McKay Towers next to Rosa Parks Circle is our favorite affordable sushi restaurant, Sushi Yama. It’s a very small business that is easily overlooked, but we go every chance we get. Phil loves their California and crispy eel rolls, whereas Veronica is less into seafood but loves their tempura sweet potato roll and avocado roll. They’re unfortunately closed on Sundays, but try to make time in your schedule to visit them!
Spread over two stories, the GRAM’s collection spans Renaissance to Modern Art, with particular strength in European and American 19th and 20th century painting and sculpture.
Located right on the Grand River, the GRPM has core exhibits including an A-Z collection of discovery, the history of Grand Rapids, West Michigan bird and fish habitats, and a massive 75 foot finback whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling as soon as you walk in the door. They also have rotating travel exhibits, including the Bodies Revealed exhibit that we explored on one of our first dates in early 2020.
